This tool enables Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 to receive the next build of Windows 10 Technical Preview via Windows Update. The Windows 10 Preparation Tool is downloadable for the following links.

I guess, at January the 21th 2015 we will know more about this step. At this date Microsoft scheduled a new press event about next steps for Windows 10.

Althought I’m asking how much sense will this be. Upgrading a production system to a technical preview isn’t a serious thing (or a no go). But, as Microsoft offers an upgrade path for Windows 7/Windows 8.1 users, I’m sure, many of them will “hit the cliffs” of a beta software. Hopefully they will have a system backup and won’t hit support forums with questions “help me to go back to my old Windows”.

Paul Thurrott and Rafael Riviera has drawn a detailled view on the Windows 10 Preparation Tool. They documented their findings here. The Windows 10 Preparation Tool checks for upgrade eligibility. Upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10 Technical Preview ist only possibile, if Service Pack 1 is present. In Windows 8.1 Update 1 (KB2919355) is required to upgarde to Windows 10 Technical Preivew. Upgrading to Windows 10 is only available for the following languages: “en-us”, “zn-cn”, “pt-br”, “en-gb”, “ja-jp”, “ru-ru”, “de-de”, “fr-fr”, “ko-kr”, “it-it”, “es-es”, “zh-tw”, “sv-se”, “fi-fi”, “tr-tr”, “ar-sa”, “nl-nl”, “cs-cz”, “pl-pl”, and “th-th”. Windows 10 Preparation Tool adds the following key into the registry:
