Windows 10 Anniversary Update trouble shooting

Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Version 1607) causes on some system serious trouble during install. This blog post accumulate a few hints to solve several update issues.

General hints

Many update errors are caused because users are ignoring basic things before starting the Anniversary Update (which is a kind of upgrade). The Anniversary Update isn't offered

Microsoft rollout Windows 10 Anniversary Update in waves. Details are discussed in my blog post Windows 10 Anniversary Update rollout explained. Also deferred upgrade settings may delay Anniversary Update (see).

Update is blocked from unknown app

The install assistant checks all hardware and software on show stoppers and report issues. In some cases "unknown" apps are reported as incompatible. I wrote the article Virtual PC 2007 blocks Windows 10 Anniversary Update install to deal with this issue.

Update error 0x80070057

Upgrade error 0x80070057 has several root causes and is addressed in my blog post Windows 10: Update error 0x80070057. In some cases third party antivirus software is the root caouse. Some users are reporting, it helps to switch off internet connection after Anniversary Update is finish with download and has begun installing.

Update error 80070017

This error code indicates a CRC error during copying (see). Broken downloads or third party AV software can be the root cause. Sometimes it helps to reset the Update store (see here). Or use Media Creation Tool to download an install image and execute setup.exe.

Update error 0x80200056

This error occurs if the user who started the upgrade of Windows 10 logged off before the upgrade was completed successfully and if, at the same time, another user who is currently logged on tries to do the same upgrade. Microsoft has detailed this error here. If the error can't be fixed, use Media Creation Tool to download an install image and execute setup.exe.

Update error 0x80070070 – 0x50011, – 0x50012, – 0x60000

Update errors 0x80070070 – 0x50011, 0x80070070 – 0x50012 or 0x80070070 – 60000 indicates not enough free space on the Windows disk. Anniversary Update needs (depending on the machine) 20 and more GB free space to save Windows.old.

Update error 0x80073712

This error occurs when a file needed by the Windows 10 upgrade is damaged or missing (see).

Update error 0x800F0922/0xc1900104

Error 0x800F0922 has been covered here (Windows 10 Client or Windows Update can't connect the Microsoft Update-Server). Or the partition "System reserved" is to small. The partition "System reserved" can be increased using tools like MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.

Update error 0x800F0923

This error occurs when there is a severe incompatibility with either an application, a service, or a driver (see here).

Update error 0xC1900208 – 0x4000C

This error occurs when an incompatible application that's installed on the computer prevents the upgrade process from completing (see here). See also the article Virtual PC 2007 blocks Windows 10 Anniversary Update install to deal with this issue.

Update error 0xC1900106

This error occur occurs when the upgrade process ends as follows: Installation failure: Windows could not install the update. Here are solutions:

  • If antivirus software is running on the computer, disable it during the upgrade process.
  • Run Windows Update to make sure that Windows is updated.
  • Make sure that the latest drivers and firmware are installed. To do this, go to the computer manufacturer's website, or contact their support team.

Black screen after update

The graphics driver may be incompatible. If you use several graphic cards, remove them and use only one card during installation. On notebooks with hybrid graphics uninstall the driver for the 2nd GPU.

System freezes

Some users are reporting a "freezing" system after upgrading to Windows 10 Anniversary Update. I've found third party antivirus software as a show stopper. This reddit.com forum post addresses other issues and collects workarounds.

Solve upgrade issues using an ISO image

Many update errors can be avoided, it you grab Media Creation Tool, download an installation image and create a DVD or USB stick. Then execute setup.exe found on the install media.
