Printing problems after KB3177723

I've mentioned printing problems after installing KB3177723 within my blog post Windows Update KB3177723, KB3179573, and KB3179574. One of my blog readers has reported this issue (some documents remains unprinted in the printer queue). Also a lengthily discussion may be found at Microsoft Answers forum. KB3177725 also breaks the connection between Adobe Acrobat and Word. So rendering it impossible to use Acrobat to convert Word files to PDFs under Windows 7. This is well-documented in this Adobe forum thread. Also other users are reporting printing issues with other software packages here at reddit.com. Also Autodesk users are reporting problems.

Microsoft confirms printing issues with security bulletin MS16-098

Another German blog reader pointed me to KB3177725, where Microsoft has added the following text:

Known issues

After you apply this security update and you print multiple documents in succession, the first two documents may print successfully. However, the third and subsequent documents may not print.

Sounds to me similar to the issue reported after installing KB3177723. But now MS16-098: Description of the security update for Windows kernel-mode drivers: August 9, 2016, KB3177725, has been identified as a root cause. This affects all supported Windows versions:

  • Windows Vista Service Pack 2
  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1
  • Windows 8.1, Windows 8.1 Pro, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1 Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard
  • Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, Windows Server 2012 R2 Foundation
  • Windows Server 2012 Datacenter, Windows Server 2012 Standard
  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials, Windows Server 2012 Foundation
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1,  Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2

Unfortunately Microsoft didn't provides a hint how to solve that issue nor they are writing whether a fix will be released later. The only workaround till yet is uninstalling this critical update.

Advices from several vendors

Vendors offering software that depends on working printing features are informing their users about this issues. German DATEV has releases a document Druck aus den Programmen zur Abschlussprüfung /Bilanzberichtserstellung oder zur Konsolidierung nicht möglich (Fehler) addressing this printing issue. They are writing, that network printers are not able to print documents, multiple print jobs or multiple page print jobs are not printed complete and so on. DATEV identified the following updates causing this trouble:

I've addressed the Windows 10 updates in blog post Windows Update KB3177723, KB3179573, and KB3179574. DATEV provides only one workaround: Uninstall these cumulative updates on your own risk.

Also vendor combit addresses printing issues in list & label forum (link broken). They wrote: Printing on a network printer works 1-2 times, afterwards printing is not possible anymore. An application restart seems to help. They also advice uninstalling the security patch mentioned above. They wrote in an update to the post that Microsoft is working on a fix, but no schedule is released yet.

Fix is scheduled for September 13, 2016

In another update in list & label forum (link broken), Bjoern Eggstein, Managing Director combit GmbH, wrote, that a fix is scheduled from Microsoft for September 13th 2016 for all platforms. This is the next Microsoft patch day.

    Unbelievable.
Printing is a bread and butter task in almost each company and MS does not bother to deploy a fix immediately?

    Greetings,

Albeit a bit dated, we encountered similar issues when this update was installed on systems, in our case using Zebra printers. After searching and reading through forum posts, I noticed that a fix was released. The system owner informed me that this resolved their issue. I'm not sure why the fix isn't linked to the actual KB article, nor why the update isn't available in SCCM/WSUS, only the Windows Update Catalog.

Thanks to DanMattson from MSFT for posting it here:

Hopefully this helps someone out until MSFT releases an revised version of the update in September.
