Details about the issue

After installing June 13, 2017 security updates syncing Microsoft Outlook with an iCloud account is no longer possible. Independently of the Outlook version, it's no more possible to access iCloud contacts or calendar appointments. Outlook shows the following error dialog.

iCloud-Fehlermeldung in Outlook

The set of folders cannot be opened. MAPI was unable to load the information service C:\PROGRA~2\COMMON~1\Apple\Internet Services\APLZOD.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured.

It seems that file APLZOD.dll is missing in Windows, so MAPI calls are failing. I have had addressed this issue for Outlook 2007 within my blog post Office/Outlook und Windows Patchday issues. But the issue has also been observed in Outlook 2010, 2013, and 2016.

It's not a bug, it's by-design

Microsoft has told us days after shipping June 2017 security updates about an important change in Outlook. The information may be found within Microsofts KB article Outlook known issues in the June 2017 security updates. In Issue #6 they write:

iCloud fails to load properly in Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016….

The loading of unregistered MAPI services has been disabled by default to make Outlook more secure.

The workaround for Outlook 2010, 2013, 2016

If you're using Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2016, use the following steps:

  • Uninstall iCloud client via Windows control panel
  • Head over to this Apple page and download the iCloud client for Windows
  • Reinstall the downloaded iCloud client in Windows

After installing iCloud client, try to reconnect Outlook with your iCloud account.

If the iCloud password isn't accespted, try an one time authentification, Apple provides. I've discussed this within my German blog post Windows 10 Kalender-App lässt sich nicht mit iCloud-Kalender verbinden for Windows 10 calendar app.

A workaround for Outlook 2007

It seems that the solution provided above doesn't work for Outlook 2007. But Microsoft outlines another workaround: Re-enable loading 3rd party services in Outlook 2007. The steps how to do that, has been described within this Microsoft document.
