Skype[German]Microsoft released an update for Skype for Business client on July 31, 2017 in Microsoft Office 365. Skype client is updated to version 1707 (Build 8326.2033). After this update, a login is no longer possible in non-english Skype for Business clients.

Skype for Business Version 1707 (Build 8326.2062)

Shorty after I published the blog article Microsoft Office: Non security updates August 1, 2017 discussing non security Office updates, released on August 1, 2017, I received a comment from German blog reader G2:

Yesterday I got W10 update „2017-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1703 (KB4032188)". After a reboot, an Office 365 update from Current Channel („1707 – Build 8326.2062 (July 31, 2017)") has been offered …

After installing, the Skype for Business client's GUI was broken. My attempts to repair Office 365 failed. Only a downgrade to „1706 Build 8229.2103 (July 19, 2017)" has repaired Skype for Business client.

Going back to previous Current Channel Builds 8326.2059 (July 28, 2017) and 8326.2058 (July 27, 2017) didn't fix the GUI issue.

A few hours later I came across this forum entry, reporting the same issue within Skype for Business client. The user wrote:

on one of our computers, the login screen of Skype for Business is lost (see screenshot). Before I reinstall the Office Suite, is there a solution known?
Office 2016 is updated: Version 1707

Skype login bug confirmed

Blog reader G2 has posted a link to this Microsoft support article (Unable to log-in to Skype for Business Version 1707 (Build 8326.2033) and later for non-English users). Within this article, Microsoft confirms the login issued in Skype for Business clients under Version 1707 (Build 8326.2033) for non-english versions.

Launching Skype for Business using Version 1707 (Build 8326.xxxx) in Windows 10 results to an error or a blank window and does not show the log-in screen.

Skype for Business blank open window

Microsoft is working on a fix and treating this with high severity. The workaround: Revert back to Skype Version 1706 Build 8229.2103 (July 19, 2017).

  1. Karl (al Qamar) says:

the rollback to this version is not a good idea either because the Office executables have been signed with an invalid certificate of Microsofts test environment Root CA. This causes false positive alerts with Malware protection software like Acronis True Image 2017 NG /2018 Active Protection
I amcusing O365 and the most recent version (August rollup) under Windows 10 1703 I don't see this behavior yet.

Another workaround confirmed by a German blog reader: Just switch the Lync Language settings to English – and the login screen will arrive.
