Error description

If you attempt to install updates under Windows 10 (or earlier versions), the installation may terminate with error code 0x800706B5. Here is a typical error description.

This is on my HP Stream 8 Tablet.  Trying to get updates installed – hangs with this error code.

The Microsoft page has similar error in 2008 – no help.

I stumbled also upon this error code in scenarios, where Microsoft Store app failed during download (see).

What does error code 0x800706b5 mean?

Error 0x800706b5 stands for RPC_S_UNKNOWN_IF, i. e. the interface for Remote Procedure Calls is unknown. There are several reasons for this error (a missing service, a damaged Windows and so on). Within this article some additional details about error 0x800706b5 are given:

Event log service is not running. BITS tries to initialize the event logger object during initialization and fails to start, if the initialization fails. If event log service is not running, then the initialization fails with RPC_S_UNKNOWN_IF error.

Fix #1: Try a reboot

To fix the error, you should try first a restart of the system. This is helpful, for example, if a service has been stopped. If necessary, you can also force a complete restart by holding down the Shift key while selecting the Restart command. The system boots to Windows PE environment, where you need to select the option to resume Windows boot.

Fix #2: Check the service status

If a restart does not help, the services should be checked. To do this, enter services into the Windows search box and then invoke Services via context menu command Run as administrator. After that, step through the services and check their startup type (sometimes a dependent service is set to Disabled).

In any case, the BITS service (Intelligent Background Transmission Service), its startup type (should be auto-delayed), and its dependent services should be checked. The Windows Event Log service should also be started. You can also check the RPC service and RPC endpoint mapping as well as RPC locators.

Fix #3: Check your system for damages

If a reboot or checking the services doesn't help, try to check Windows for damages. Details to do this has been discussed within my blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store. Up to Windows 7 only the command sfc is supported, because dism has been introduced in Windows 8.

The background for my recommended fix # 3: Check and repairing system files assures, that Event logging services won't be prevented from running due to damaged system files.

Within this MS Answers forum thread somebody mentioned, that he was forced to uninstall some software and reboot, to overcome the update error.

Fix #4: Run Update troubleshooter

I've set this fix at the end of the troubleshooting session, because I'm not sure, if it helps. Let's hope, that the troubleshooter checks the service settings and changes wrong settings. More details about update troubleshooter for Windows may be found within this Microsoft document.

Repair Windows

If the suggestions mentioned above doesn't help, I would try a repair install using an Inplace Upgrade. Obtain an ISO install image (via Media Creation Tool) and mount the media in Windows. Then launch Setup.exe located on the install image under Windows and let Windows be installed over the existing Windows. This keeps programs and data.
