Die Zufriedenheit mit Windows, speziell Windows 10 und Microsofts Ansatz von Windows as a service sowie den bereitgestellten Updates ist sowohl bei Konsumenten als auch bei IT-Profis katastrophal \u2013 so zumindest das Ergebnis einer kleinen Umfrage. Nun hat Woody Leonhard auf ComputerWorld einen offenen Brief von Susan Bradley (Patch Lady) an Microsofts Verantwortliche ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Hier einige Informationen und der Brieftext.<\/p>\n

Ich denke, wer nicht mit Scheuklappen durch die Welt l\u00e4uft, bekommt zumindest mit, dass es mit Windows und dessen Updates, aber besonders im Windows 10-Umfeld, nicht wirklich rund l\u00e4uft. Auch die 'bei mir klappt alles'-Fraktion sollte inzwischen mitbekommen haben, dass es bei anderen alles andere als mit Windows 10 klappt.<\/p>\n
In Teil 1<\/a> und Teil 2<\/a> dieser Artikelreihe habe ich \u00fcber die Ergebnisse zweier Umfragen hinsichtlich der Zufriedenheit von Privatanwendern (Konsumenten) und IT-Profis (Consultant Patcher) mit Windows sowie speziell Windows 10 und den durch Microsoft bereitgestellten Updates berichtet. Die Umfrage erf\u00fcllt keinen Anforderungen an statistisch repr\u00e4sentative Benutzergruppen, sondern hatte das Ziel, mal ein Stimmungsbild aus den genannten Gruppen zu bekommen. Mit Teilnehmerzahlen von >800 (Konsumenten) und >1.100 (IT-Profis) ist der Stichprobenumfang gen\u00fcgend gro\u00df, um Tendenzen und Stimmungen ableiten zu k\u00f6nnen.<\/p>\n Die Ergebnisse der Umfragen sind eine heftige Klatsche f\u00fcr Microsoft. Oder hart ausgedr\u00fcckt: Microsoft entwickelt Windows 10 an den Bed\u00fcrfnissen des Markts vorbei und trifft mit seinen Vorstellungen bez\u00fcglich Windows as a service nicht das, was die Leute brauchen. Die Update-Qualit\u00e4t ist im Keller, die Unzufriedenheit mit Microsoft ist sowohl bei Konsumenten als auch bei IT-Profis extrem hoch.<\/p>\n Nachdem die Ergebnisse vorliegen, hat Susan Bradley, anl\u00e4sslich des dritten 'Geburtstags' von Windows 10, einen offenen Brief an Microsofts F\u00fchrungsriege: Satya Nadella, Carlos Picoto und Mr. Scott Guthrie verfasst. The quality of updates released in the month of July, in particular,<\/i><\/strong> has placed customers in a quandary: install updates and face issues with applications, or don't install updates and leave machines subject to attack.<\/p>\n In the month of July 2018 alone there are 47 knowledge base bulletins<\/a>with known issues. Recently many of the participants on the listserve have expressed their concerns and dissatisfaction with the quality of updates as well as the timing of updates.<\/p>\n I recently asked the list members to answer several questions about patching on Windows 7 to Windows 10. The full results of this unscientific survey can be read here<\/a>. I urge you to take the time to read the responses. It showcases that your customers who are in charge of patching and maintaining systems are not happy with the quality of updates and the cadence of feature releases, and feel that it cannot go on as is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Die Details der Umfragen habe ich hier gek\u00fcrzt, da diese in Teil 1 und Teil 2 nachzulesen sind. Bradley zeigt konkret auf, dass das Windows Insider Programm was f\u00fcr 'zum hinter den Spiegel stecken' ist, da dieses die Bugs und Probleme nicht aufdeckt.<\/p>\n Anschlie\u00dfend weist sie deutlich darauf hin, dass die Frequenz der Funktionsupdates (2 Mal im Jahr) bei Windows 10 zu einer 'Patch-M\u00fcdigkeit' bei den Betroffenen f\u00fchre.<\/p>\n I am disturbed when I see users and consultants talk about taking drastic measures to take back control of updating and rebooting. Some are disabling Windows Update as a drastic measure to ensure that updates do not reboot systems when they are not wanted. It's clear that your team also acknowledge<\/a> that unexpected updates are problematic. But your customers deserve better than \"promising\" results. They deserve a stable platform that reboots only when they want it to. The operating system needs to do a better job of communicating to the end user and especially to the patching administrator when a machine will receive an update. The addition of the Windows Update for Business settings that often conflict with other group policy settings cause confusion, not clarity.<\/p>\n While it's commendable that you've listened to feedback and made changes to Windows update during these three years, the fact is that these changes in each version release have caused confusion, and in some cases behavior that was not expected at all. Dual scan<\/a> is one such change that caused confusion, and as a side effect caused administrators to have updates installed when they did not want them. The lack of clear communication regarding update changes leads to this confusion. Administrators are having to follow various blogs<\/a> and sites<\/a> and even Twitter channels to be able to understand the changes. The lack of basic documentation of Windows update error codes, the fact that it took several feature releases to make changes to the unreadable Windows update log<\/a>, the fact that it took several feature releases before acknowledging the problem of symbol publishing<\/a> showcases that the changes in Windows updating have had a major impact in the servicing and handling of Windows 10. I personally know of several large enterprises that are not on the current Semi Annual channel release of 1803 and are in fact several feature releases behind. The constant change and churn is not helping firms in their deployment strategies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Sie erw\u00e4hnt Beobachtungen, dass Administratoren und Consultants drastische Ma\u00dfnahmen wie das Deaktivieren von Updates untern\u00e4hmen, um von diesem Desaster verschont zu bleiben. In weiteren Abschnitten geht sie auch auf den Umstand ein, dass Verbesserungen in der Kommunikation (Stichwort Spectre\/Meltdown) bei der Verteilung von Updates erforderlich seien. H\u00e4ufig seien Angaben in den KB-Artikeln zu Updates schlicht falsch oder fehlen. Der offene Brief m\u00fcndet in dem Wunsch, dass man Microsoft-Software w\u00fcnscht\/erwartet, auf der man in der Tat alle Updates und Patches sofort und ohne Vorbehalte installieren k\u00f6nnen muss. Aktuell ist man weit von diesem Zustand entfernt, das Vertrauen in Microsofts Update-F\u00e4higkeiten ist am Boden.<\/p>\n Die \u00fcbliche Microsoft-Floskel 'wir h\u00f6ren auf ihr Feedback' bekommt nun die Nagelprobe. Wird Microsoft etwas \u00e4ndern, um aus diesem Schlamassel heraus zu kommen. Ich denke, in Redmond ist die 'Kacke sprichw\u00f6rtlich am Dampfen'. Ob man sich allerdings auf sinnvolles besinnt \u2013 oder doch eher noch einen Zahn zulegt, wird man sehen m\u00fcssen. Ich findet es jedenfalls beeindruckend, was Susan Bradley da vorgelegt hat und w\u00fcnsche ihr im Sinne von uns allen wirklich Erfolg. Und wenn ihr als Admins das unterst\u00fctzen m\u00f6chtet, tragt die Probleme an eure Microsoft-Vertreter weiter und teilt die Informationen hier bzw. bei ComputerWorld.
