I then noticed during last night the following tweet from Bleeping Computer and recognized, that a fix will be offered.

Disabled automatic selection of DNS over HTTPS providers during a test to enable wider deployment in a more controlled way.

This comment by senior software engineer Nihanth Subramanya from the Mozilla bug tracker has more details.

The browser can be updated via the help menu (About Firefox, worked fine here). The new Firefox is also available for download here for various platforms. Alternatively you can download the browser via FTP.

For Firefox 68.9.0esr no fix is necessary, since the versions with long-term support do not include the new test features.
