The setup wizard writes log files with corresponding instructions. But their evaluation is laborious. I've published some articles on this topic (see links at the end of the article).

SetupDiag: a new diagnose tool

Within a Tweet Microsoft's Michael Niehaus has been made aware of a new diagnostic tool which is intended to help with Windows 10 installation issues.

New SetupDiag tool released to help figure out why Windows 10 upgrades fail https://t.co/AhA4i8Z9xS

— Michael Niehaus (@mniehaus) 2. SetupDiag.exe is a standalone diagnostic tool that gives you details about why an upgrade to Windows 10 was not successful..

The target system must be Windows 10 and the tool requires .NET Framework 4.6. Because the tool runs at the command prompt, it requires administrative privileges.

SetupDiag analyze Windows Setup log files

SetupDiag examines the Windows Setup log files and attempts to analyze them. The following folders are scanned for corresponding files and the log files are evaluated.

\\$Windows.~bt\\sources\\panther
\\$Windows.~bt\\Sources\\Rollback
\\Windows\\Panther
\\Windows\\Panther\\NewOS

The goal is to determine the cause of an error when you upgrade or upgrade your computer to Windows 10.

SetupDiag can run on the computer that could not be upgraded.

You can export logs from the computer to another location and run SetupDiag in offline mode (/Mode:<Offline> switch). The path to the log files can be specified with the /LogsPath: option.

If SetupDiag.exe is lunched from the Command Prompt window and the User Account Control query is confirmed, it evaluates the log files in online mode

As a result, a file SetupDiag_<date>.log is created in the same folder where the SetupDiag.exe is located. You can also specify the path to the output file:

SetupDiag.exe /Output:<path+file>

A detailed explanation of the call options can be found on this Microsoft page. An example output is also shown there. The tool can also be used to analyze BlueScreens. There are also some known problems with the tool at the moment.

Similar articles
How to decode Windows errors?
Windows 10: Analyze upgrade errors
Windows: How to decode update 0x8024…. errors
Check and repair Windows system files and component store
Windows 10: Upgrade error 0xC1900101 – 0x20004
Windows 8 Upgrade: Troubleshooting and analysis
Windows 10: Update error 0x80070057
Windows 10: Rollback to Windows 8.1 is 'missing'
Fix: Windows 10 hangs in update installation loop
How to block Windows 10 updates

[German]Microsoft has released in April 2017 Microsoft diagnostic tool called SetupDiag.
