At the end of 2020, the possibility of printing via the Internet is to be phased out; local printing will then be back on the agenda.

In a statement on Friday, 22 November 2019, Google announces that cloud print will no longer be supported by December 31, 2020. From January 1 , 2021, devices on all operating systems will no longer be able to print via Google Cloud Print. Cloud Print, Google's cloud-based printing solution, has been in beta since 2010. Now users who rely on this solution have to look for alternatives.

The background to this decision is that Google has improved native printing for its Chrome OS and no longer needs cloud printing. The company plans to continue adding native printing capabilities. For environments outside Chrome OS or in multi-OS scenarios, Google recommends using the platform's native printing infrastructure and/or working with a printing solution provider.

In its statement, Google lists several native print management features that Chrome OS currently supports or will support by the end of 2019.
