Microsoft has released a script to fix a broken search in 2019. Within this blog post I will show, what Microsoft provides on solutions to fix a broken search.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vg01.met.vgwort.de\/na\/85dbbfc0bfef45b3b7409c25a95282fe\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>In early February 2020, the search using the search box in the Start menu of Windows 10 November 2029 Update (version 1909) suddenly failed worldwide and no longer worked. I discussed this incident, including a fix (Bing search) in the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2020\/02\/05\/windows10-search-is-broken-how-to-fix-it-feb-5-2020\/\">Windows 10: Search is broken \u2013 how to fix it (Feb. 5, 2020)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After a few hours, Microsoft had its failed Bing search service up and running again, and the search should actually work again. However, I found it odd that the blog post continued to receive comments that the fix would work &#8211; long after Microsoft fixed the issues. So there are still people whose searches for this incident do not work at all.<\/p>\n<h4>Reset Windows search by script<\/h4>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/2020\/if-win10-search-is-still-giving-you-a-black-box\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post<\/a> from Woody Leonhard came across a tweet from Tero Alhonen. A user complained on February 6, 2020 that his search box still showed a<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Reset Windows Search PowerShell script <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rbRnFaZIjw\">https:\/\/t.co\/rbRnFaZIjw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tero Alhonen (@teroalhonen) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/teroalhonen\/status\/1225434646965575680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 6, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span id=\"preserve308393f5fb4e48ce897957663caa2073\" class=\"wlWriterPreserve\"><script src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Alhonen referred the user to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/100295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PowerShell script<\/a> (<em>ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1<\/em>), which can be used to reset the Windows search. The script was already published on September 13, 2019. Microsoft writes about this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Resolve Windows Search problems by running the PowerShell script ResetWindowsSearchBox.ps1 . You must have administrator privileges to run this script.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is sufficient to run the script under an administrator account by right-clicking and using the Powershell context menu command. If there is an error because PS modules are blocked, the web page for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/100295\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PowerShell script<\/a> provides hints to set the <em>-ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted<\/em> policy.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On the download page, the PS script is listed for Windows 10 version 1903, but the script also refers to version 1909.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>KB article 4520146 to fix the search<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft has published also a support article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4520146\/fix-problems-in-windows-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4520146<\/a> (<em>Fix problems in Windows Search<\/em>), which Microsoft last updated on 3 January 2020. This article contains various tips for resetting the search, which should apply to the following Windows 10 versions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1909<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1903<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1809<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1803<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1709<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1703<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1607<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 Version 1511<\/li>\n<li>Windows 10 (RTM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The kb article gives recurring instructions for repairing Windows Search as may be found within the following list.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Check for updates (in the hope, that Microsoft has patched the search again).<\/li>\n<li>Run the troubleshooting for search and indexing.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows Search (kill <em>SearchUI.exe <\/em>in Task Manager).<\/li>\n<li>Reset the search, using the above script for Windows 10 version 1903 and later. For older versions up to version 1809 Cortana should be reset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Somehow the search in Windows 10 seems to be a rather shaky affair.
