But the rollout is held in waves to bring only compatible machines to the new Windows 10 version. Since this release a lot of smaller and bigger bugs in the new Windows 10 version, which can affect individual users, have been reported.

Already in the article Windows 10 Version 2004/Windows Server 2004 released I had advised to do the upgrade at a later time, because the new build still contains many bugs. On the Windows 10 version 2004 status page there was a list of ten confirmed bugs for the Windows 10 version 2004 release that Microsoft is investigating. I also had other information about further bugs. For many bugs Microsoft then set an upgrade blockade for affected machines. This also affected their own Surface machines. Microsoft has used June 2020 to work off certain bugs. Fixed bugs led to the upgrade blockade being lifted.

Surfaces are ready for the Upgrade

On some devices, the Always On, Always Connected mode caused errors and spontaneous restarts. This also affected Microsoft's Surface devices. Here is the error description from the Windows 10 Version 2004 status page.

Errors or unexpected restarts for some devices using Always On, Always Connected

Some devices using the Always On, Always Connected feature might have compatibility issues with Windows 10, version 2004 (the Windows 10 May 2020 Update). Affected devices will have more than one Always On, Always Connected capable network adapter, such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, and might receive errors or unexpected shutdown or restart.

Microsoft had then blocked an upgrade to Windows 10 Version 2004 for its Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, which should only be lifted when the appropriate drivers and firmware updates are available. However, this problem was solved with KB4557957 , so the upgrade blockade was lifted effective June 29, 2020. Surfaces should therefore be offered the function update to Windows 10 version 2004. Please note, however, that it can take up to 48 hours until the update to Windows 10, version 2004 is offered.
