Some users are arguing, that a Windows 10 upgrade tool like the GWX app will be back.

I've blogged about the optional Windows update at Windows/Office update summary October 4, 2016. Microsoft says, Update KB2952664 (Compatibility update for upgrading Windows 7) an Update KB2976978 (Compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8) has the following goal:

This update performs diagnostics on the Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program. These diagnostics data helps determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating (Windows 10) system is installed. This update will help Microsoft and its partners ensure compatibility for customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system.

WinBeta.org and InfoWorld asked, whether those updates will bring something like the Get Windows 10 App (GWX) back. A Microsoft spokesman told InfoWorld, that speculation about an Windows 10 upgrade tool are wrong.

There is no Get Windows 10 or upgrade functionality contained in this update. This KB article is related to the Windows Update and the appraiser systems that enables us to continue to deliver servicing updates to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, as well as ensure device and application compatibility.

That's what's also my impression, because an upgrade tool to switch from Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 doesn't makes sense after the end of the free upgrade period. Microsoft also has removed Get Windows 10 app from Windows 7/8.1 with update KB3184143 (see Windows 7/8.1: Update KB3184143 removes Get Windows 10 app).

Similar articles:
Windows 7/8.1: Update KB3184143 removes Get Windows 10 app
Windows/Office update summary October 4, 2016.

Microsoft has released two compatibility updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 at 10/05/2016.
