There were probably still bugs. The colleagues from deskmodder.de now mentioned in this tweet that an update of the email client will add OpenPGP support.

According to the release notes Thunderbird version 78.2.1 is only offered as a direct download from thunderbird.net and not as an upgrade from Thunderbird version 68 or earlier. A future version will include updates from earlier versions. Automatic updates are available for users who are already running version 78.0 or higher.

Changes in Thunderbird 78.2.1

The release notes list the following changes in Thunderbird 78.2.1

OpenPGP enabled by default

OpenPGP: Disabled the use of MD5/SM2/SM3 algorithms

In addition, the following bug fixes are included:

OpenPGP: Users with sub-identities were unable to encrypt or sign messages when switching identitie

OpenPGP message security window did not support dark mode

But note the limited add-on support: Starting with version 78.0 Thunderbird supports only MailExtensions. Possibly the add-ons preferred by various users were not updated for compatibility reasons.
