After uninstalling the update, everything works again. However, there may be a workaround. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Security Only Quality Update KB5003681 <\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/vg01.met.vgwort.de\/na\/095e3b08f7b344efaaef49598156e761\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\">Security Only Quality Update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5003681\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5003681<\/a> for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 addresses a number of vulnerabilities in Windows components.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Authentication, Windows Fundamentals, and Windows Storage and Filesystems.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I had mentioned the update in the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2021\/06\/09\/patchday-windows-8-1-server-2012-updates-june-8-2021\/\">Patchday: Windows 8.1\/Server 2012 updates (June 8, 2021<\/a>).&nbsp; <\/p>\n<h2>Defender real-time protection cannot be activated<\/h2>\n<p>Within my German <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/09\/patchday-windows-8-1-server-2012-updates-8-juni-2021\/#comment-108369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a>, various readers have reported having Defender real-time protection disabled by the update. The attempt to re-enable the real-time protection in the maintenance center fails due to timeout with error code 0x800705b4. Blog reader Klaus Pit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2021\/06\/09\/patchday-windows-8-1-server-2012-updates-8-juni-2021\/#comment-108369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>After the \"Security-only update\" the real-time protection of the Defender is deactivated. The attempt to reactivate in the maintenance center fails due to timeout.<\/p>\n<p>0x800705b4<\/p>\n<p>If I uninstall the update, everything is fine again. What should I do?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Klaus then installed the Monthly Rollup Update at the end of the day and everything worked again. There are other readers who report exactly this problem in the comments.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<h2>Possible workaround<\/h2>\n<p>Besides the installation of the Monthly Rollup Update I found <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210612160127\/https:\/\/www.thewindowsclub.com\/error-0x80508020-0x800705b4-for-windows-defender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this article<\/a> on the internet. There it says that in the registry in the branch:<\/p>\n<p><em>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows Defender<\/em><\/p>\n<p>you should check the <em>DisableAntiSpyware <\/em>DWORD value. If the value is set to 1, you should reset it to 0. Alternatively, the key is:<\/p>\n<p><em>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows Defender<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(this is where the group policy settings for Defender are managed).
