Microsoft has now confirmed such a case with Intel SMBus Controller devices in Windows 7\/8.x (and its corresponding server builds). <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>The Windows Update driver misery <\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/d950e58a0a3844f082fc46a22713062c\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\">Microsoft has started in December 2016 to release several optional INTEL driver updates via Windows Update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. None of those updates has been documented at all. After I've been alerted from my German blog readers, I investigated this case and blogged about it (see <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2016\/12\/29\/windows-78-1-optional-intel-system-driver-updates\/\">Windows 7\/8.1: Optional INTEL System driver updates<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>Several users told me, that the drivers doesn't fits their machine`s hardware parameters. My recommendation was not let Windows install those drivers. Later I received several user reports, claiming that their drivers has damaged the system's functionality. <\/p>\n<h3>Microsoft confirms SMBus Controller damaged via WU<\/h3>\n<p>Now Microsoft has confirmed a case, where Windows Update damaged systems (thanks Woody Leonhard from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AskWoody<\/a> for the tip). Within the article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4011290\/loss-of-functionality-for-some-intel-smbus-controller-devices-after-yo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Loss of functionality for some Intel SMBus Controller devices after you update your system through Windows Update<\/a> Microsoft wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>When you update your computer through Windows Update, some Intel SMBus Controller device drivers are unexpectedly overwritten with Intel Chipset Device software. This causes loss of functionality for some affected Intel SMBus Controller devices.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This issue applies to the following Windows operating systems:  <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows 7\n<li>Windows Server 2008 R2\n<li>Windows 8\n<li>Windows Server 2012\n<li>Windows 8.1\n<li>Windows Server 2012 R2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Intel SMBus Controller device provides the operating system with information about the device and hardware. This enables the operating system to display the correct product name for that piece of hardware in Device Manager.<\/p>\n<p>The Intel Chipset Device software does not install device drivers for the Intel SMBus Controller. Updating Intel SMBus Controller with wrong drivers via Windows Update causes a loss of device functionality.<\/p>\n<h3>How to fix that issue?<\/h3>\n<p>Microsoft recommends to rollback the driver using the following method in Windows Device-Manager:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch Device-Manager via Windows Control Panel, select <em>View<\/em>, choose <em>Devices by Type<\/em>, and then expand the <em>System Devices <\/em>branch.\n<li>Double-click the <em>SMBus device<\/em>, then click the <em>Driver <\/em>tab, and click the <em>Roll Back Driver <\/em>button to restore the SMBus Controller device driver.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After this rollback restart your Windows system. Then the functionality should be back. Just in case that this method won't help, Microsoft provides several other methods to restore the old functionality.
