I just received an e-mail from a reader whose customers suddenly (i.e. probably since the weekend) want a Microsoft Outlook password. What is at issue: Does this only affect the systems set up by the reader in question with Microsoft Office 365, or are there others affected.

Readers' comments on the problem

German blog reader Stefan mailed me on August 29, 2022 to describe his problem with his customers/users with Outlook as follows:

Good day,

We have already received calls from almost all clients who use Office 365 (Online Plan 1, i.e. only Outlook) that the password is being requested again. No updates have been applied, different Outlook versions (2016/2019) and different Windows versions are in use and nothing has been changed on the accounts. Since we specify and set up the complex passwords, the clients do not have them in their heads, of course, so it's a bit tedious.

Currently I don't have any information about the specific Outlook build and environment. But I user confirmed the issue in my German edition of this article, saying that connections to Exchange Online are affected. I still have also the feedback from Frank via Facebook: I had this last Friday only on the Outlook client on Android. Under iOS not yet. I will see Win 11 in a moment. If it occurs there, I'll report here again. Anyone else with this error pattern?

Microsoft's July 2022 support post

As of July 29, 2022, Microsoft has this support post on the issue of Outlook constantly prompting for a password when trying to connect to Microsoft 365 mailbox. The cause Microsoft states there is that this problem can occur if the Network Security at Logon setting on the Security tab of the Microsoft Exchange dialog box is set to a value other than Anonymous Authentication.

Microsoft Exchange Security´ settings, Source: Microsoft

But I guess, this has nothing to do with the current issue.

[German]A quick question for the administrators among the readers.
