Check Point researchers revealed a new attack vector which threatens millions of users worldwide – attack by subtitles viewed in media players. Also old VLC media player versions are vulnerable. VideoLan has released a security update 2.2.5.1 for VLC player (Security hardening for DLL hijacking environments).

VLC version 2.2.6

Now VLC player version 2.2.6 has been released. During writing the German blog post, the new version is listed on th eVideoLAN main site, but on sub pages, the old version 2.2.5.1 was still linked.

Where can I get version 2.2.6, what's changed?

VLC version 2.2.6 ist offered for download at FTP site. The Changelogs published online doesn't provide details what ahs changed. But the file NEWS.txt dowloaded with VLC 2.2.6 contains the following change log:

Video output

Fix systematic green line on nvidia

Fix direct3d SPU texture offsets handling

Demuxer

Fix heap buffer overflows

What should I know else?

I guess the majority of my blog readers are using Windows. Windows users should know the following.

Thee .exe download from VideoLan project comes with an installer. The same occurs with .msi files found on FTP server.

The portable version of VLC player may be obtained as .zip or .7z archive files. Unpack into a local folder and execute the .exe file.

Another tip: The .zip archive of VLC player has 50 MB in size, while .7z archives are 28 MB in size. But .7z also contains the sdk folder with an ActiveX for IE 11 and Visual Basic.

[German]The VideoLan project has released version 2.2.6 of VLC player.
