\"Edge\"[German<\/a>]Microsoft has released an update of the Edge (Chromium) browser in the stable channel to 120.0.2210.89 on December 20, 2023. Thanks to the reader for the tip<\/a>. This version introduces a new feature, but seems to have to fill the hard disk with BITS files again. Here is a brief overview of this new version.<\/p>\n

\"\"In the release notes<\/a>, Microsoft only writes something about \"Fixed various bugs and performance issues.\". However, Microsoft states that there has been a feature update with regard to improvements to Microsoft Edge workspaces for offline features. Any workspace that was previously opened on a device will be cached locally and can be opened on that device from that cache, even if a connection cannot be established. Changes are retained on this device and are resolved to the synchronized version when a connection can finally be established.<\/p>\n

Note –<\/strong> This feature is a controlled feature rollout. If this feature is not displayed, users should check again while Microsoft continues the rollout. The new feature should arrive at some point.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Fixed issues (also previous versions)<\/h2>\n

I already received a note in this German comment<\/a> about Edge version 120.0.2210.77 that the hangs when printing via \"Save as PDF\"<\/a> from Edge 120.0.2210.61 has been fixed in this version. This German comment<\/a> should also refer to this bug.<\/p>\n

Still new and old issues<\/h2>\n

In this German comment<\/a> Oliver points out that Edge version 120 has a problem with automatic redirection from http to https. Oliver has deactivated automatic redirection (edge:\/\/flags\/#edge-automatic-https<\/em>) in his company environment. Nevertheless, sites with http are automatically redirected to https. However, this useful security feature causes problems if various web services in a company are still based on http. According to Microsoft Support, the developers are working on a workaround.<\/p>\n

German blog reader Ben points out an old problem with Microsoft Edge in a comment (within my\u00a0 German discussion room) and writes aBeware Microsoft scam with cookies!<\/em> He points out that Microsoft Edge version 120.0.2210.89 (Official Build) (32-bit) is once again cluttering up the TMP folder.<\/p>\n

\nEdge BITS files in TEMP<\/p>\n

The browser writes folders and files with the name edge_BITS_xxxx_yyyyyyyy<\/em> to the Temp folder of the user profile – see screenshot above. I had already written about the problem in more detail in the blog post Windows 10\/11: Edge fills up the Temp folder with Edge_BITS_xxx files<\/a>. Ben also states that he has set the following Edge settings:<\/p>\n

The switches are set so that cookies and other website data shall be deleted when the browser is closed. However, Ben states that this is not the case, the cookies are retained. In other words, the Edge does not delete cookies and browser data when it is closed. He has tested this on over 100 different x86 clients with the latest and penultimate version of Microsoft Edge. Can anyone confirm this?<\/p>\n
