All Windows 11 machines that are compatible with version 23H2 will now be offered the corresponding feature update and will be forcibly updated to this version in the coming days.

Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2)

Microsoft had released Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2), as officially announced on 31 October 2023, as a kind of "Halloween" edition. The release of Windows 11 2023 (version 23H2) was officially announced in the Windows Blog in the post How to get the Windows 11 2023 Update . I had reported on the second feature update for Windows 11, which was released in autumn 2021, in the blog post Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2) released.

New features already presented in September

Windows 11, version 23H2 is a cumulative upgrade, which means that the operating system contains all previously announced functions as well as some new improvements. For example, Chat has now been renamed Microsoft Teams (free) and is pinned to the taskbar by default. In addition, entries for the system components of Windows 11 are labelled "System" in the Start menu under All apps.

Furthermore, Microsoft Copilot is the big thing in Windows 11 version 23H2, even if this function is only being introduced in the European Union at a slower pace (if the release is also possible via registry intervention) because Microsoft wants to make adjustments with regard to the European Digital Markets Act (DMA) – should be completed by March 2024. The overview of the changes was already published on this Microsoft page in September 2023. I mentioned this in the blog post Windows 11 23H2 will be released on September 26, 2023 (with Copilot).

Rollout slowed down so far

Windows 11 2023 Update was immediately available worldwide on compatible machines. However, as with previous Windows 10/11 feature updates, the rollout takes place in waves. The upgrade was only rolled out in Windows Update when the telemetry data showed that the device in question was ready for the upgrade. Initially, only newer devices were supplied with the upgrade.

However, Microsoft has gradually increased the availability of the new Windows 11 version and monitored the quality of the upgrades via telemetry. There was some confusion because the Media Creation Tool did not yet create a Windows 11 23H2 at the start (see Microsoft confirms: The Media Creation Tool does not yet download a Windows 11 23H2 installation image). The installation image was not distributed until mid-November 2023 (see Windows 11 23H2 installation image available via Media Creation Tool).

In January 2023, I reported on cases where a new Windows 11 installation was suddenly made possible on incompatible machines in the article Windows 11: Does the hardware installation check fail – or are old CPUs allowed? However, this is not a good idea, as there were also the first cases of problems with apps that relied on newer CPUs (see Windows 10: App throws "File system error" (-2147219196) – CPU not compatible).

Final Rollout of Windows 11 23H2

Microsoft has now announced the start of the final rollout of the Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2) on this Windows 11 status website. There it says:

On 20 February 2024, Windows 11, version 23H2, also known as the Windows 11 2023 Update, will enter a new rollout phase. Microsoft will begin automatically updating eligible Windows 11 devices to version 23H2.

This automatic update is targeted at Windows 11 devices that have reached or are nearing the end of their maintenance intervals (i.e. will no longer receive updates). The upgrade decision for a machine is based on machine learning (ML) training. This recognizes whether a machine is ready for the upgrade. Microsoft will continue to train this ML model in order to deliver this new Windows version safely and gradually and to ensure a smooth update. It remains to be seen whether this will be the case.

If you have a suitable Home or Pro device, you can update it to Windows 11 version 23H2 by selecting Windows Update in the settings and then activating the option Get the latest updates as soon as they are available. Then select Check for updates. Once the update is available for the device, the option to Download and install will be displayed. For more information on how users can get the update, watch this video. Question: Are you or have you been offered this upgrade?

For managed systems in enterprises, however, the administrator decides when the rollout of Windows 11, version 23H2, begins.

Ähnliche Artikel:
Windows 11 2023 Update (23H2) released
Windows 11 23H2 will be released on September 26, 2023 (with Copilot)
Microsoft confirms: The Media Creation Tool does not yet download a Windows 11 23H2 installation image
Windows 11 23H2 installation image available via Media Creation Tool

[German]Approximately 3 months after the release of the feature update to version 23H2 for Windows 11, Microsoft is starting the final rollout phase.
