Both updates are causing issues with WSUS, the clients are reporting error 0x8024401c during update search.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/cffbe7a9d8de4423817e09e64f4cd545\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>In business environments Windows Server may be used to distribute updates within a company's network using WSUS (Windows Server Update Services). But Microsoft failed 2017 several times and released updates, that broke WSUS (see my blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/07\/24\/july-2017-updates-kb4025336-kb4025331-breaks-wsus\/\">July 2017 Updates KB4025336\/KB4025331 breaks WSUS<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Windows 10 Version 1607: KB4034658 &amp; KB4034661<\/h2>\n<p>In August 2017 Microsoft released two cumulative Updates <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/de-de\/help\/4034658\/windows-10-update-kb4034658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KB4034658<\/a> (August 8, 2017) and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/de-de\/help\/4034661\/windows-10-update-kb4034661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KB4034661<\/a> (August am 16, 2017) for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Version 1607). Both updates are causing WSUS issues, the clients are reporting error 0x8024401c during update search.<\/p>\n<p>I received some reader comments and has mentioned this issue within my blog posts <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/08\/14\/issues-after-microsofts-august-updates\/\">Issues after Microsoft's August Updates<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/08\/17\/windows-10-v1607-update-kb4034661-august-16-2017\/\">Windows 10 V1607: Update KB4034661 (August 16, 2017)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Error description<\/h2>\n<p>After installing the updates mentioned above on Windows 10 clients, and restarting the system, the clients are reporting error 0x8024401c during update search. I found on August 13, 2017 a blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/kickthatcomputer.wordpress.com\/2017\/08\/13\/wsus-sup-causes-high-cpu-and-clients-fail-updates-scan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WSUS SUP causes high CPU and clients fail updates scan<\/a>\u00a0 mentions a high CPU and RAM load and posts some hint to fix this issue.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Wray has published on August 15, 2017 an article <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200618011450\/https:\/\/robertwray.co.uk\/blog\/2017-08-update-for-windows-10-anniversary-update-1607-breaks-wsus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017-08 update for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (\u201e1607\") breaks WSUS<\/a> addressing this issue and mentions update KB4034658 a how to uninstall this package.<\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft has confirmed this bug<\/h2>\n<p>Writing the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/08\/17\/windows-10-v1607-update-kb4034661-august-16-2017\/\">Windows 10 V1607: Update KB4034661 (August 16, 2017)<\/a> I noticed, that Microsoft is aware of this WSUS issue. The known issue section of <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/de-de\/help\/4034658\/windows-10-update-kb4034658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KB4034658<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/de-de\/help\/4034661\/windows-10-update-kb4034661\">KB4034661<\/a> for Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Version 1607) says.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>WSUS servers will exhibit increased CPU, memory, and network utilization when Windows Update clients perform their first scan after installing KB4034658.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Microsoft investigates the issue and will publish details as soon as possible. Until a fix is available, the only workaround is blocking these updates in WSUS.<\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft explains the behavior<\/h2>\n<p>Just a short addendum.
