Here are a few details.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The issue caused by Update KB4034664 and KB4034679<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/33302a45aef640788b312781401dd202\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>Microsoft's Update KB4034664 (and KB4034679) for Windows 7 and Windows Server is causing display issues with several applications on a second screen. I've seen issues with PDF viewer, Excel, Office 2013, JAVA and Irfanview. I was also able, to reproduce the issue in Visual Basic Editor in Word 2000 (see screenshot below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Fehlende Icons nach Update KB4034664\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/ejVFTmd.jpg\" alt=\"Fehlende Icons nach Update KB4034664\" width=\"622\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft confirmed this issue, that occurs, if the 2nd screen has negative coordinates (like it is shown below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bildschirmaufl\u00f6sung\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/bpuKOGb.jpg\" alt=\"Bildschirmaufl\u00f6sung\" width=\"619\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I've blogged about this issue within my blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/08\/12\/windows-update-kb4034664-is-causing-trouble-on-2nd-screen\/\">Windows Update KB4034664 is causing trouble on 2nd screen<\/a> and in more details within my German article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/12\/windows-update-kb4034664-strt-pdf-anzeige-auf-2-monitor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Windows Update KB4034664 Anzeigeprobleme auf 2. There are several workarounds to overcome this issue.<\/p>\n<h2>Update KB4039884 fixes this issue<\/h2>\n<p>Two and a half week after releasing the buggy patch, Microsoft attempts to fix this issue with another update. Woody Leonhard received an anonymous tip (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/2017\/microsoft-patches-buggy-windows-7-patch-kb-4039884-solves-the-dual-monitor-rendering-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see<\/a>). Update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4039884\/windows-7-update-kb4039884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB4039884<\/a> released on August 25, 2017 for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack addresses an issue:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2026 where UI elements, including menu bars, are missing from Windows and Java applications running on computers with multiple monitors (multimon). The issue affects console and Remote Desktop logons when the main monitor is not in the top left area of the monitor layout in Control Panel. Applications may also stop responding or not work properly when moved between monitors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This issue impacts the following releases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2017-08 Monthly Rollup &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB4034664<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2017-08 Security-only update &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB4034679<\/a><\/li>\n<li>2017-08 Preview of Monthly Rollup &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB4034670<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before you install this update, you must install <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB4034664<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034679\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB4034679,<\/a> and then apply this update. Update KB4039884 is only available at <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.update.microsoft.com\/v7\/site\/Search.aspx?q=KB4039884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft Update Catalog<\/a>, so download and install this update manually.<\/p>\n<h2>Addendum: Known issues and side effects<\/h2>\n<p>User feedback within my German blog (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/27\/windows7-fix-fr-dual-monitor-anzeigebug-kb4039884\/#comment-47523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this comment<\/a>) says, that after installing this update a new update search finds additional updates, dated from 2012 up to 2016. Also users <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/forums\/topic\/microsoft-patches-buggy-windows-7-patch-kb-4039884-solves-the-dual-monitor-rendering-problem\/#post-130757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at askwoody.com<\/a>\u00a0reporting the same issue.
