But no description has been published about the purpose of this update. Now it's clear, why this update was released.

Update KB4039871 for Windows 8.1 (and for Windows Server 2012 R2) from August 25, 2017 was a non security update. Microsoft hasn't released details about that update until August 28, 2017. I received several mails asking about the purpose of this update. Therefore I published the article Windows 8.1: Update KB4039871 (August 25, 2017) with all information I collected.

My guess was, that Update KB4039871 for Windows 8.1 fixes something in Monthly Preview Rollup Update KB4034663 (see Microsoft's Windows (Preview) Updates (August 15, 2017)). Because it was a non security update, my recommendation was, to block this update.

It's an Update for the Preview Rollup Update

Microsoft has released finally a KB article for Update KB4039871 with the title 'August 28, 2017—KB4039871 (Update for Preview of Monthly Rollup)' – no kidding. The reason for this out of band update: It addresses an issue with WSUS update metadata processing that can cause some clients to time out with a 0x8024401c error. I've discussed this error within my blog (see below).

Similar articles:
Windows 8.1: Update KB4039871 (August 25, 2017)
Microsoft's Windows (Preview) Updates (August 15, 2017)
Microsoft explains WSUS error 0x8024401c in Windows 10 V1607
Windows 10 (V1607): KB4034658/KB4034661 causes WSUS error 0x8024401c
Issues after Microsoft's August Updates

[German]Microsoft has released on August 25, 2017 Update KB4039871 for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
