\"Windows\"[German<\/a>]I am posting the observation of a German blog reader also here in the blog, which relates to Remote Desktop Protocol sessions (RDP sessions) under Windows 11 24H2. In the reader's environment, there are massive problems with these RDP sessions hanging for users in certain scenarios. But it doesn't seem to be an isolated case, as I have seen.<\/p>\n

User reports Windows 11 24H2 RDP problem<\/h2>\n

They are using Windows 11 24H2 and sessions via the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). The blog reader has noticed that the RDP logon process has been causing problems in this working environment since switching to Windows 11 24H2. According to the reader, the RDP logon hangs if the user in question already has an active but disconnected connection on a client.<\/p>\n

When trying to log in, this simple process gets stuck in the state shown in the picture above (the spinning top does not continue to spin). The only known solution so far is to restart the client via PowerShell remote, for example.<\/p>\n

Problem description on reddit.com<\/h2>\n

The blog reader then did some research and came across the thread Windows 11 24H2 – RDP session hangs on logon<\/a> from October 2024 on reddit.com. There, the thread creator asks whether other users also have problems with RDP sessions under Windows 11 24H2. For him, the process hangs on RDP logon – exactly as described above.<\/p>\n

This user states that RDP connections to Windows 10 or Windows 11 23H2 work fine. However, as soon as an attempt is made to establish an RDP connection to a machine with Windows 24H2 version, the process simply hangs and freezes.<\/p>\n

The only solution the user has found is to restart the computer, he writes. The user can then re-establish a normal RDP connection for some time. In this scenario, all machines are running on a hypervisor.<\/p>\n

In the thread, other users confirm this problem, with these hangs being observed on both virtual machines and physical computers. One user noted that Windows Server 2025 was also affected. A ticket with Microsoft has been open for some time without a fix being announced.<\/p>\n

Strangely enough, RDP connections to Windows 11 24H2 machines do not seem to exhibit the problems. Only an RDP connection from a Windows 11 24H2 machine to another computer shows this problem. One affected person wrote that he was able to solve the problem using sfc \/scannow<\/em> – corrupted system files were probably the cause. However, this does not appear to be a general solution.<\/p>\n

During a search, I came across the Microsoft Answers forum thread RDP sessions on mostly windows 11 computers stop responding<\/a> from November 14, 2024, where the same problem of hanging RDP sessions is addressed. There is no solution there.<\/p>\n

The Microsoft Answers forum thread Issue where remote desktop connection to Windows 11 Pro (24H2) cannot be established<\/a> from November 7, 2024 seems more interesting to me. The same problem of hanging RDP sessions is addressed there, although the thread already has three pages. There, a user reports that a workaround via group policy brings improvement in his environment. In the Group Policy Editor under:<\/p>\n

Local Computer Policy> Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Remote Session Environment<\/pre>\n
The Enforce Removal of Remote Desktop Wallpaper<\/em> policy is set to Enabled.<\/em><\/p>\n
Does anyone know a solution?<\/h2>\n
The reader notes that the monthly Microsoft updates (including the January 2025 security update) do not seem to address this problem. This is also reflected in the reddit.com thread Windows 11 24H2 – RDP session hangs on logon<\/a>. There, the thread creator states in several posts that he is at patch level .2894 and still cannot log on to existing sessions via RDP. The patch level .2894 corresponds to the status of Windows 11 24H2 described in the article Patchday: Windows 10\/11 Updates (January 14, 2025)<\/a>.<\/p>\n
