Are your apps from the Microsoft Store being updated again since the March 2025 update was installed? I have had reports that certain apps are no longer being updated for users, but instead run into an error.

A reader message: Apps are not being updated

German blog reader Christian O. runs a system with Windows 10 22H2 (x86) and also uses apps from the store. He contacted me in January 2025 and reported that "for some time now" there have been problems with updating certain apps in the Windows Store under Windows 10 22H2 (x86).

The photo above shows the error. Microsoft reported an error in the Store when updating the "Mail and Calendar" app, but only gave general statements of the type "We encountered an error" and offered a Try again button.

Problem caused by updates?

The reader blames the update problem with the apps on certain Windows updates. According to Christian, the error when updating the apps has reproducibly occurred at least since the Windows 10 December update (12-2024). The reader suspects that the problem may have existed before that.

AppxSvc crashes via ucrtbase.dll

The reader then went looking for the error and found what he was looking for. According to the event log, AppxSvc crashes with a ucrtbase.dll error message (error code 0xc0000409) as soon as an attempt is made to update the apps via the Microsoft Store.

The error code 0xc0000409 probably stands for STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN, caused in the specified module. According to this websitee, the error code 0xc0000409 can be caused by an improperly installed application. The remedy may be to uninstall and reinstall the application. I reported this in the German blog post Windows 10 22H2: Store-Apps werden nicht mehr aktualisiert.

March 2025 update should fix the problem

On March 12, 2025, Microsoft released the cumulative update KB5053606 for Windows 10 version 21H2 – 22H2 (see Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (March 11, 2025)).

Now the affected reader has contacted me again and reported that the app update issues have been resolved since the update was installed.
