On April 10, 2025 Microsoft has released an out-of-band update KB5002623 to fix that crashed. On April 15, 2025, Microsoft also made the KB5002623 update for Office 2016 available in the WSUS.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Review of the crashes in Office 2016<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vg06.met.vgwort.de\/na\/0907752c668749a29f3c7f103f34fcf7\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>Microsoft released update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/description-of-the-security-update-for-office-2016-april-8-2025-kb5002700-a117656e-2724-449f-8245-2d5128de1241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002700<\/a> update for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI version) on April 8, 2025. This update closes a series of vulnerabilities (<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-29791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-29791<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-29792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-29792<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-29816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-29816<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-27745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-27745<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-27748\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-27748<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-27749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-27749<\/a>\u00a0und\u00a0<a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/msrc.microsoft.com\/update-guide\/en-US\/vulnerability\/CVE-2025-27752\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">CVE-2025-27752<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The installation of this security update resulted in crashes of Office 2016 applications\u00a0 like Excel, Outlook and Word. I reported on the problems with Outlook in the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/04\/09\/outlook-2016-calendar-access-blocked-after-april-2025-update-kb5002700\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Outlook 2016: Calendar access blocked after April 2025 update KB5002700<\/a>\u00a0and mentioned disabling weather integration as a workaround.<\/p>\n<p>In the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/04\/09\/word-excel-2016-crashing-after-april-2025-update-kb5002700\/\">Word\/Excel 2016 crashing after April 2025 update KB5002700<\/a> crashes in Word 2016 and Excel 2016 were mentioned. There was a suspicion that a PDF plugin or communication with online services could be the cause.<\/p>\n<h2>Update KB5002623 available in WSUS<\/h2>\n<p>On April 10, 2025, update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/april-10-2025-update-for-office-2016-kb5002623-d60c1f31-bb7c-4426-b8f4-69186d7fc1e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002623<\/a> for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installations) was released to fix these crash issues (see O<a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/04\/10\/office-2016-update-kb5002623-fixes-crashes-in-excel-outlook-word-april-10-2025\/\">Office 2016 update KB5002623 fixes crashes in Excel, Outlook, Word (April 10, 2025)<\/a>). However, this update was only available via direct download links from the support article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/april-10-2025-update-for-office-2016-kb5002623-d60c1f31-bb7c-4426-b8f4-69186d7fc1e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002623<\/a>. Not very manageable for larger Office 2016 MSI installations.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/10\/office-2016-update-kb5002623-vom-10-4-2025-behebt-abstuerze-in-excel-outlook-word\/#comment-214126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this German comment<\/a>, Oliver had asked whether the update would be made available for the WSUS in the near future. Microsoft had not announced anything about this. I therefore assumed that Microsoft would follow the usual line and only make the fixes from <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/april-10-2025-update-for-office-2016-kb5002623-d60c1f31-bb7c-4426-b8f4-69186d7fc1e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002623<\/a> for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installations) available on Patchday in May 2025 via Windows Update and thus also for the WSUS.<\/p>\n<p>A download via the Microsoft Update Catalog for import into the WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) was also not available. However, Microsoft has now responded, as I have seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/10\/office-2016-update-kb5002623-vom-10-4-2025-behebt-abstuerze-in-excel-outlook-word\/#comment-214126\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">various comments<\/a> from readers here on the blog. Update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/april-10-2025-update-for-office-2016-kb5002623-d60c1f31-bb7c-4426-b8f4-69186d7fc1e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002623<\/a> for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI installations) should be available via WSUS since April 15, 2025.<\/p>\n<h2>Questions about that update<\/h2>\n<p>Readers have asked whether it is necessary to install both Office 2016 updates on the clients &#8211; especially as some administrators had uninstalled the faulty update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/description-of-the-security-update-for-office-2016-april-8-2025-kb5002700-a117656e-2724-449f-8245-2d5128de1241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002700<\/a> for Microsoft Office 2016 (MSI version) from April 8, 2025. As far as I know, both updates (<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/description-of-the-security-update-for-office-2016-april-8-2025-kb5002700-a117656e-2724-449f-8245-2d5128de1241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002700<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/april-10-2025-update-for-office-2016-kb5002623-d60c1f31-bb7c-4426-b8f4-69186d7fc1e5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5002623<\/a>) need to be installed.
