On May 27, 2025 another out-of-band update for Windows 11 24H2 has been released to fix the same issue. And there is an out-of-band update for Windows 10 22H2. Here is a brief overview what's been documented by Microsoft.

Hyper-V Out-of-Band-Update

On May 23, 2025, Microsoft published the Take Action: Out-of-band update to address issue on devices running Hyper-V on Windows Server 2022 in the Windows Release Health Dashboard of Windows Server 2022.

Hyper-V freezes observed

According to the article, Microsoft has identified an issue where certain confidential virtual machines (Azure confidential VMs) running on Hyper-V with Windows Server 2022 intermittently stop responding or restart unexpectedly. This leads to impairments in service availability and requires manual intervention.

Confidential Azure VMs provide strong security and confidentiality for tenants. They create a hardware-enforced boundary between the application and the virtualization stack. Such VMs can be used for cloud migrations without changing the code. The platform ensures that the status of the VM remains protected.

Windows Server 2022 Update KB5061906

To fix the above issue, the out-of-band update KB5061906 was released on May 23, 2025. This update is only available in the Microsoft Update Catalog. Affected administrators must therefore download the update manually and then install it.

The out-of-band update is cumulative, i.e. no previous update is required for installation. It replaces all previous updates, is only available for Windows Server 2022 and is not a security update.

Has the May 2025 security update KB5058385 not yet been installed and are Windows Server 2022 systems with Hyper-V affected? Microsoft recommends that you do not install the May 2025 update KB5058385. Instead, you should install the OOB update KB5061906. If you are not affected, you logically do not need to install the OOB update. The support article states:

[Hyper-V Platform] Fixed: An issue in the direct send path for a guest physical address (GPA) where confidential virtual machines running on Hyper-V with Windows Server 2025 might intermittently stop responding or restart unexpectedly, affecting service availability and requiring manual intervention.
