When transferring large amounts of data, errors are said to occur reproducibly when saving to certain SSDs with certain controllers. This can lead to data loss.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Windows 11 24H2 Update KB5063878 (August\u00a012,\u00a02025)<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vg04.met.vgwort.de\/na\/3e960f40250642d5856cdbf421f7583b\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>Cumulative update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5063878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5063878<\/a> for Windows 11 24H2 from August 12, 2025 includes quality improvements and security patches (I reported on this in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/08\/13\/patchday-windows-10-11-updates-august-12-2025\/\">Patchday: Windows 10\/11 Updates (August 12, 2025)<\/a>). Microsoft lists some details about fixes in the support article.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, several AI components were rolled out with the update. Further details can be found in the support article and in last month's preview update (see <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/07\/23\/windows-10-11-preview-updates-july-22-2025\/\" rel=\"bookmark\">Windows 10\/11: Preview Updates July 22, 2025<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2>Reports of SSD problems<\/h2>\n<p>I came across this topic late on Sunday at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neowin.net\/news\/report-microsofts-latest-windows-11-24h2-update-breaks-ssdshdds-may-corrupt-your-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">neowin.net<\/a>, where colleagues referred to <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Necoru_cat\/status\/1956130393050243325\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this tweet<\/a> from a Japanese person with the X alias @Necoru_cat. This person is apparently an IT professional who builds his own PCs, mostly based on AMD, and describes himself as a \"stray cat,\" as he writes about himself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Windows 11 24H2: SSD-Probleme mit Update Update KB5063878\" src=\"https:\/\/i.postimg.cc\/HsmN8TCw\/image.png\" alt=\"Windows 11 24H2: SSD-Probleme mit Update Update KB5063878\" width=\"554\" height=\"607\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since most blog readers are not very proficient in Japanese, I have included a screenshot of another tweet above. The Japanese user's message can be summarized in a few points:<\/p>\n<p>Stay away from the KB5063878 update (the user specifies the date August 15, 2025) if you are running Windows 11 24H2 with SSDs. The user has encountered serious problems with the combination of SSD, Windows 11 24H2, and the KB5063878 update.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The error pattern: SSD drives are no longer recognizable for Windows 11 24H2 (the S.M.A.R.T. values can no longer be read).<\/li>\n<li>Although it is sometimes possible to access the buffered directory structure of the medium, the associated files cannot be read.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The problem occurs in Windows 11 24H2 when writing large amounts of data to certain SSD storage devices. In tests conducted by the user, the problem occurs with SSDs with a utilization rate of over 60% after approximately 50 GB of continuous write data transfer. Similar problems have also been reported with HDDs, the user notes.<\/p>\n<p>According to user tests, Phison's NAND controllers are more prone to these malfunctions. Among these controllers, models without DRAM are more susceptible to malfunction at lower write volumes. A list of potentially affected SSD models can be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Necoru_cat\/status\/1956949132066898080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this tweet<\/a>. If the problem occurs, there is a high risk of file corruption.
