These updates replace the regular updates from August 12, 2025, and are intended to resolve the reported issue with the broken restore and recovery.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The problem with the August 2025 update<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vg04.met.vgwort.de\/na\/5c8ba08d942b45d8ac00bd7b22267851\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>Microsoft released on August 12, 2025 various cumulative security updates for Windows clients and servers, which I described in the articles P<a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/08\/13\/patchday-windows-10-11-updates-august-12-2025\/\">Patchday: Windows 10\/11 Updates (August 12, 2025)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/08\/13\/patchday-windows-server-updates-august-12-2025\/\">Patchday: Windows Server Updates (August 12, 2025)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, various Windows clients encountered the problem that the functions for resetting and repairing Windows (Reset and Recovery) no longer worked under Windows 10 and Windows 11. I reported the details in the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2025\/08\/19\/august-2025-patch-day-review-upgrade-error-0x8007007f-reset-recovery-broken\/\">August 2025 Patch Day Review: Upgrade Error 0x8007007F; Reset\/Recovery Broken<\/a>and also listed all affected Windows client versions. Microsoft had announced out-of-band updates for Windows 10 and Windows 11.<\/p>\n<h2>Out-of-band updates for Windows 10\/11<\/h2>\n<p>German blog readers have already pointed out in comments (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/?p=314743\/#comment-227505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/?p=314743\/#comment-227505\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>) that Microsoft released out-of-band updates for Windows 10 (KB5066188) and Windows 11 (KB5066189) on August 19, 2025 (thanks for that). On August 19, 2025, Microsoft published the support article<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/resolved-issues-windows-11-23H2#3640msgdesc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-linktype=\"self-bookmark\">Reset and recovery operations on some Windows versions might fail<\/a>\u00a0on the Windows Update Release Health page and marked the issue as \"resolved.\"<\/p>\n<p>It is said that the described problem has been resolved with the out-of-band (OOB) updates <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5066189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-linktype=\"external\">KB5066189<\/a> (Windows 11 22H2 &#8211; 23H2) and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5066188\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-linktype=\"external\">KB5066188<\/a> (Windows 10 21H2 (LTBS) and 22H2). Microsoft recommends installing these updates instead of the regular updates.<\/p>\n<p>Fritz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/?p=314743\/#comment-227509\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writes here<\/a> that an out-of-band update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/help\/5066187\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB5066187<\/a> has also been released for Windows Server 2019 (and Windows 10 2019 (IoT) Enterprise LTSC). The previous updates are marked as \"superseded\" in WSUS.
