It referred to the AutoDesk support article After installation of Security Update for Microsoft Windows AutoCAD products request admin credentials.

A reader's comment on AutoCAD problems

On August 25, 2025, German blog reader Bernie commented on the blog post Windows 10/11: Aug. 2025 Updates machen Streaming-Probleme with this comment and also reported serious problems with AutoCAD versions 2022 to 2026 in connection with the August 2025 updates on various Windows versions.

How does the problem manifest itself? The reader received a call from a new employee who reinstalled AutoCAD via the software repository used in the company. After starting AutoCAD for the first time, the UAC opens and admin rights are requested. The cause is the following Microsoft updates from August 12, 2025 (see Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (August 12, 2025)):

KB5063877: Security update for Microsoft Windows 10 2019 LTSC

KB5063709: Security update for Microsoft Windows 10 21H2/22H2

KB5063875: Security update for Microsoft Windows 11 22H2/23H2

KB5063878: Security update for r Microsoft Windows 11 24H2

According to Bernie, the problem no longer occurs if the updates are uninstalled. All clients on which AutoCAD was already started once before installing the August 2025 update are not affected. It therefore only affects new installations of the software on Windows after the above updates have already been installed. When AutoCAD is started for the first time, User Account Control (UAC) is invoked and administrator permissions are required.

Confirmation in the AutoCAD forums and from support

In the Autodesk forum, there is a thread titled Why is a random msi running for standard users the first time they open AutoCAD?, where an administrator asks why the MSI installer is suddenly being called up and requesting administrator permissions. It is quickly confirmed there that this is related to the August 2025 updates for Windows.

Autodesk has now published a support article entitled After installation of Security Update for Microsoft Windows AutoCAD products request admin credentials, which summarizes the whole case.

Firefox and SAP also affected

German site Dr. Windows has a German post in its forum dated August 15, 2025, pointing out that the Firefox browser and SAP applications are also affected by the same behavior. A follow-up post states that the problem has been confirmed. It is due to security hardening measures with the August 2025 patches. Further investigations are underway to determine whether a hotfix or similar solution can be provided.

German blogger Martin Geuß mentioned this a few hours ago in the post MSI-Fehlercode 1730: Firefox, SAP und AutoCAD fordern nach August-Patchday Adminrechte and writes that after closing the UAC dialog box (without entering an administrator password), error code 1730 is returned by the MSI installer. Several pieces of information were then added to the German forum by those affected.

In addition to Windows 10 and Windows 11, the problem can also be reproduced on Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2022 (and presumably also on Windows Server 2016 and 2025).

The error only occurs if the software in question is installed via a software distribution solution in user context.

The consequence of such installation is that the program entry in the Start menu is adjusted again by calling msiexec.exe for repair, when the user first launches the program. This is precisely what triggers the UAC query.

A workaround: Disable LUA repair

The workaround, which is supposedly provided by AutoCAD Support in this Autodesk forum post, is to disable the Limited User Account (LUA) repair of the MSI installer using the DisableLUAInRepair policy. To do this, set the 32-bit DWORD value DisableLUAInRepair to 1 in the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Installer

Then the UAC prompt should no longer appear. I mentioned this registry entry in the blog Patchday: Windows 11/Server 2022-Updates (September 10, 2024).

Similar articles:
Microsoft Security Update Summary (August 12, 2025)
Patchday: Windows 10/11 Updates (August 12, 2025)
Patchday: Windows Server Updates (August 12, 2025)
Patchday: Microsoft Office Updates (August 12, 2025)

Windows 11 24H2: Update KB5063878 causes installation error 0x80240069
Windows 11 24H2: KIR fix for WSUS installation error 0x80240069 with update KB5063878
Windows 11 24H2: Update KB5063878 as a re-release for WSUS (August 14, 2025)
Windows 11 24H2: Does the Aug. 2025 update KB5063878 cause SSD errors?
Windows 11 24H2: Microsoft investigates reports of SSD issues caused by KB5063878Windows 11 24H2: Preview update KB5062660 causes CertificateServicesClient error events
Windows 10/11: Aug. 2025 updates cause streaming problems

[German]The security updates for Windows released on August 12, 2025, have caused some "collateral damage." Users of the Autodesk product AutoCAD are encountering a problem after installing the August 2025 updates on various Windows versions, whereby administrator rights are suddenly …
