Hotfix versions are not tied to the Patch Tuesday release schedule because they do not contain security updates, only functional bug fixes. Currently, an archiving issue in hybrid environments is being fixed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/vg04.met.vgwort.de\/na\/0f3c3c47abc347e59519f37ab0dc7992\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>I became aware of the hotfix updates for Exchange Server via the following <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/andresbohren\/status\/1965324709958168768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neowin.net\/news\/microsoft-releases-hotfix-updates-for-various-exchange-server-editions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> by my colleagues. Microsoft's Exchange team published the Tech Community article <a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/exchange\/released-september-2025-exchange-server-hotfix-updates\/4448721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Released: September 2025 Exchange Server Hotfix Updates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/exchange\/released-september-2025-exchange-server-hotfix-updates\/4448721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/p6YTVr9.png\" alt=\"Exchange HotFix Updates Sept. 2025\" width=\"597\" height=\"601\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a Techcommunity article, hotfix updates are available to fix the problem described below for the following Exchange items.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) <a class=\"lia-external-url\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=108370\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RTM<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Exchange Server 2019 <a class=\"lia-external-url\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=108369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CU14<\/a>, and <a class=\"lia-external-url\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=108368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CU15<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Exchange Server 2016 <a class=\"lia-external-url\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=108367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CU23<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It should be noted that Exchange Server 2016 and Exchange Server 2019 will no longer be supported as of October 14, 2025, and will no longer receive updates. Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) will then be the only on-premises Exchange Server version still supported. After installing the hotfix update, the <a href=\"https:\/\/microsoft.github.io\/CSS-Exchange\/Diagnostics\/HealthChecker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Exchange Health Checker<\/a> should be run to verify that the installation is OK<\/p>\n<h2>Hotfix patches an archiving problem<\/h2>\n<p>The hotfix updates resolve an issue that occurs after activating the dedicated <a class=\"ocpExternalLink\" href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/ConfigureExchangeHybridApplication-Docs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bi-type=\"anchor\">Exchange Hybrid Application<\/a>. According to the Microsoft Support article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/online-archiving-fails-for-on-premises-users-in-hybrid-environment-ab3b6a9f-18bf-493b-b47d-450ad7c89ed4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Online archiving fails for on-premises users in hybrid environment<\/a>, items configured with Move to Archive are no longer automatically moved to the archive mailbox if the archive is located in Exchange Online and the primary mailbox remains on a local Microsoft Exchange Server.<\/p>\n<h2>Dedicated Hybrid App Enforcement Delays<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft referred to the dedicated hybrid app in April 2025 in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/exchange\/dedicated-hybrid-app-temporary-enforcements-new-hcw-and-possible-hybrid-function\/4440682\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dedicated Hybrid App: temporary enforcements, new HCW and possible hybrid functionality disruptions<\/a>. The original version stated that Microsoft wanted to start temporarily blocking Exchange Web Services (EWS) traffic in August 2025 using the Exchange Online Shared Service Principal (which is used by default by some coexistence features in hybrid scenarios).<\/p>\n<p>This was part of a phased strategy to accelerate the adoption of the dedicated Exchange hybrid app by our customers and make our customers' environments more secure, it said. However, the post was updated on August 18, 2025.
