Microsoft recently reminded users that support for these products will end on October 14, 2025. On this date, security updates for Windows 10 and the aforementioned Office versions will be discontinued.

Farewell to Windows 10

Here in the blog, I have repeatedly pointed out the announced end of support for Windows 10 22H2 on October 14, 2025 (see Windows 10: End of support in October 2025 – Million systems about to be replaced? as well as the other article links at the end of the post).

Microsoft has long been recommending switching to Windows 11. For owners of Windows 10 systems who cannot or do not want to switch, there is the option of obtaining extended ESU support. For private users, Microsoft offers ESU for one year, until October 2026 (see Windows 10: ESU information and FAQ for home users).

For businesses, ESU can be purchased for up to three years (see also Support for Microsoft 365 extended for 3 years for Windows 10 ESU systems). So anyone using Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 (Office 365) with ESU in a business environment will receive support until 2028.

End of support for Office 2016/2019

However, users of certain versions of Microsoft Office will also lose support in October 2025. Microsoft reiterated this fact on September 16, 2025, in the article MC1154299 – Reminder – Support for Office 2016, Office 2019, and additional apps will end on October 14, 2025.

There, Microsoft writes that support for Office 2016, Office 2019, Visio 2016/2019, Project 2016/2019, and related apps will end on October 14, 2025. This is the last patch day on which updates for these products will be delivered.

All of the programs mentioned will of course continue to work under Windows 10 and can still be used. However, after October 14, 2025, there will be no more (security) updates and, above all, no more support for the products.

Microsoft points out that these missing updates and the lack of support pose risks to the security, compliance, and performance of the products. Microsoft does not offer an Extended Security Update (ESU) program for the Office environment. Microsoft therefore recommends upgrading to Microsoft 365 Apps or Office LTSC 2024.

In Part 2, however, I will show ways in which private individuals and small businesses can continue to use Windows 10 and Office 2016/2019 securely. There is also information on the end of support for Windows 10 and effective countermeasures to continue working securely with this operating system.

Article series:
End of support for Windows 10 and Office 2016/2019 in October 2025 – Part 1
Running Windows 10 and Office 2016/2019 securely after October 2025 – Part 2

Similar articles:
Windows 10: Surprise, there is an ESU support extension; also for private users
Windows 10: Prices for Extended Security Updates announced
Microsoft wants 30 US-$ for 1 year Windows 10 consumer support extension
Windows 10: News about ESU program – free options for consumers
Windows 10: ESU information and FAQ for home users
Windows 10: 0patch provides 5 years of additional support
Windows 10: End of support in October 2025 – Million systems about to be replaced?
Microsoft's Marketing tales: Windows 11 is free for a short time; support for Microsoft 365 app ends in October 2025 for Windows 10

[German]Quick note for users of Windows 10 22H2, Microsoft Office 2016, and Microsoft Office 2019.
