Within the following the FAQ I would like to answer some questions (how long does the rollout take, how do I get the update directly etc.).

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update released

Microsoft has released Microsoft Windows 10 Fall Creators Update 0n October 17, 2017. The official announcement from Microsoft may be found within Windows Blog.

What's new in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

If you ask me, what's new and interesting in Windows 10 V1709, I have to think. Something with folder protection in Defender maybe, some new Emoijs, a new Peoples app, changes in settings, placeholder in onedrive, Photo app supports Story Remix. And Microsoft tell us, Edge has been improved, and if hardware fits, Mixed Reality is possible. Glad, Microsoft's marketing people published a few 'highlights' on this Microsoft page.

How to get this update?

To manually find out if your device is part of the first phase rollout, check for updates on the Windows Update settings page.

1. In the Search tab, type Settings and navigate within Settings page, to Update & security > Windows Update.

2. On the Windows Update page, simply click Check for updates. This will also check if your device is up to date with the latest monthly security updates.

If your device is part of the first phase of roll out, the feature update may begin downloading immediately to your PC.

You can still use your PC as you normally would while the update downloads in the background. Further details may be found on Microsoft page here.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update: rollout in waves

Microsoft is rolling out the update in waves. First, Windows computers that are still fairly new and 100% compatible will receive the function update to Windows 10 Case Creators Update.

If there are no problems, the next wave of devices enters the update cycle. In case of problems, Microsoft can also stop the rollout and fix the problem. The entire rollout can take up to three months. This was already the case with previous versions of Windows 10.

How to obtain Windows 10 Fall Creators Update?

If you want to update your existing Windows 10 system to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update immediately, you can download the ISO installation file and start an upgrade installation. Alternatively, the upgrade can be initiated on the existing computer via the Windows Media Creation Tool.

To download the Windows Media Creation Tool, go to this Microsoft page. Then execute the file MediaCreationTool.exe in an Administrator account. Windows Media Creation Tool will guide you through the steps to download an install image of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update an store it on an USB stick or in an ISO-Datei (to burn it to a DVD).

You can also download and install Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on a PC using the first option shown above in Windows Media Creation Tool.

If you decided to download an ISO image, you can uncheck the recommended settings and select either a 32 bit, a 64 bit or both images to download (see above). Downloading both install images creates an ISO file, that is to huge to burn on a DVD. So store such an image on an USB stick.

Where to download an ISO file?

Microsoft still provides an ISO install image for Techbench program on it's servers. But this isn't publicly availabe.

Fire up a browser and go to the Adguard page. Select 'Windows (Final)' and 'Windows 10, Version 1709 …' (see above). Then you are able to select a language and a file system and download the install image as an ISO file from Microsoft's (Techbench) servers.

Depending from the download source, the ISO install image contains differenct SKUs. (SKU = Stock Keeping Unit). Downloades via Adguard or MSDN contains SKUs of Windows 10 S, Windows 10 Home/Pro and Education (also N variants without Media Player and media functions). Downloads from Volume License Center (VLSC) contains Windows 10 Pro, Education and Enterprise as SKUs. Which variant is installed, will be selected via the product key requested during setup.
