But Microsoft has provided already a fix. For those affected, I briefly document within this blog post what you should know and what you can do to fix the issue, if it's not repaired automatically \u2013 or if you lost some update options.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The problem<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/f1050144873e40a58214abe9ffb01441\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\">Microsoft forgot the renew a file Windows\\SoftwareDistribution\\AuthCabs\\authcab.cab in Windows 7 Update, that sets an expire date December 3, 2017. From December 4, 2017 the Update Search in Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008 R2) failed (see screenshot below) with error 0x80248015. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Update-Fehler 0x80248015\" alt=\"Update-Fehler 0x80248015\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/2rFhIQc.jpg\" width=\"602\" height=\"385\">  <\/p>\n<p>Or Windows 7 refuses to search automatically for updates and shows the windows below.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Windows Update\" alt=\"Windows Update\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/fO0QQiX.jpg\" width=\"616\" height=\"401\">  <\/p>\n<p>Clicking <em>Seach for updates <\/em>ends with a notification, that the service could not be executed.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Update-Dienst-Fehler\" alt=\"Update-Dienst-Fehler\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/PfGtWNO.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p>I've documented that issue within my blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/12\/04\/windows7-error-0x80248015-in-update-search-dec-4-2017\/\">Windows 7: Error 0x80248015 in Update Search (Dec. 4, 2017)<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft has a fix<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft has released a fix for this problem, so the update search should work again. However, it is possible that users may have to make manual steps, to repair Windows Update search. Try to execute the following steps.  <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The screenshots are in German, but I guess, also users of other languages should be able to identify the right options.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Update-Suche\" alt=\"Update-Suche\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/aF8nX2U.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>1. Open Update search via control panel. The update search won't find anything, so click to the Hyperlink <em>More information<\/em> marked with a red arrow in the image above. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Note: It's important, that Internet Explorer 11 is the default browser. On my system it was Slimjet, which won't work. In this case launch IE 11 and enter this URL <a href=\"http:\/\/www.update.microsoft.com\/windowsupdate\/v6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">http:\/\/www.update.microsoft.com\/windowsupdate\/v6\/<\/a> . <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Windows Update ActiveX\" alt=\"Windows Update ActiveX\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/x5bvZ3y.jpg\" width=\"618\" height=\"393\"><\/p>\n<p>2. Allow the installation of <em>Windows Update Vista Web Control<\/em> in IE 11 via the button <em>Accept <\/em>(or similar). <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Update-Suche\" alt=\"Update-Suche\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/OXX6bip.jpg\" width=\"607\" height=\"383\"><\/p>\n<p>If you start an update search, new updates should be detected (here a definition update for Microsoft Security Essentials).&nbsp; <\/p>\n<h2>Some Update options are missing<\/h2>\n<p>I've posted a workarounds in my blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/borncity.com\/win\/2017\/12\/04\/windows7-error-0x80248015-in-update-search-dec-4-2017\/\">Windows 7: Error 0x80248015 in Update Search (Dec. 4, 2017)<\/a> to fix the update search. Just disabling the search for updates for other Microsoft products fixes the search.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Update-Einstellungen\" alt=\"Update-Einstellungen\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200729023943\/https:\/\/g08.imgup.net\/Update51c94.jpg\" width=\"648\" height=\"505\">  <\/p>\n<p>But this workaround had the side effect, that the lower two options in Windows Update was missing afterward (see below).  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Verschwundene Update-Optionen\" alt=\"Verschwundene Update-Optionen\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200729024159\/https:\/\/a45.imgup.net\/Update-Neu2706.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>To fix this issue, try the following steps.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>1. Open a browser and got to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/silverlight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft's webseite for Silverlight<\/a> and select the button to install Silverlight.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Silverlight Installer\" alt=\"Silverlight Installer\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/OJ8vnb3.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p>2. Select the installer <em>Install for Windows<\/em> and download the Silverlight installer (here <em>Silverlight_x64.exe<\/em>).  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Silverlight Sicherheitswarnung\" alt=\"Silverlight Sicherheitswarnung\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/CRDxj6s.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p>3. Execute the Silverlight installer and confirm the security warning and user account control warning.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Silverlight Bloatware-Installationsoptionen\" alt=\"Silverlight Bloatware-Installationsoptionen\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/FL36HYL.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p>4. Uncheck in the <em>Silverlight <\/em>install window the two options marked with red arrows and Click the <em>Install <\/em>button.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/68eZSyl.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p>5. Check <em>Microsoft Update activate <\/em>checkbox and click <em>Next<\/em>.  <\/p>\n<p>This option causes the missing options in Windows Update to become visible again, because Silverlight needs them for its own updates.  <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Silverlight Installation abgeschlossen\" alt=\"Silverlight Installation abgeschlossen\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/TOVr6aZ.jpg\">  <\/p>\n<p>As soon as the above message appears, exit the window via the close button. As soon as you call the update settings in the control panel, all options should be displayed again.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Update-Einstellungen\" alt=\"Update-Einstellungen\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200729023943\/https:\/\/g08.imgup.net\/Update51c94.jpg\" width=\"648\" height=\"505\"><\/p>\n<p>Select the option to search for Microsoft products. Then it's all back to normal, . <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Silverlight deinstallieren\" alt=\"Silverlight deinstallieren\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/aUBWoCg.jpg\" width=\"591\" height=\"373\"><\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, go to the Control Panel, select Uninstall program and in the Programs and Features window, uninstall the Microsoft Silverlight program. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[German]Since December 4, 2017 the Update Search in Windows 7 (and Windows Server 2008 R2) has been broken.
