Some Surface Book 2 devices has coil whine, and Microsoft released TPM firmware updates. And there is a trick to obtain a recovery image for the Surface LTE.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>TPM Firmware security updates<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/b7c58bae007143bdb0370f2c8f1a8abb\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" \/>Microsoft has published kb article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4073006\/security-issue-for-tpm-on-surface-devices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4073006<\/a> addressing security issues in Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chips used in their Surface models. The security issues has been describtd in Security Advisors <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.msrc.microsoft.com\/en-us\/security-guidance\/advisory\/ADV170012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ADV170012<\/a>. Infineon's TPM chips had a security vulnerability that was closed by a firmware update in October 2017. This applies to all models that use Infineon TPM chips (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.infineon.com\/TPM-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see<\/a>). Microsoft has released firmware updates for the following products:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Surface Pro 4: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4023489\/surface-surface-pro-4-update-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Update 7. December 2017<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Surface Studio: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4023490\/surface-surface-studio-update-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Update 7. December 2017<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Surface Book: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4023488\/surface-surface-book-update-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Update 10. Januar 2018<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A firmware update for the Surface Pro 3 is planned. Surface 3, Surface Laptop, Surface Book 2 and some other models are not affected. Details can be found in the KB article <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4073006\/security-issue-for-tpm-on-surface-devices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">4073006<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Surface Book 2 has 'Coil whine'<\/h2>\n<p>'Coil whine' is an acoustical effect causing noise in electronic components (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electromagnetically_excited_acoustic_noise_and_vibration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see<\/a>). Especially graphics cards seems to produce coil whine. The video below demonstrates the effect on a PC \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/malteahrens\/surface-book-2-15-coil-whine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this Soundcloud recording<\/a> gives also an impression, what coil whine is.<br \/>\n(Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HP73edpQwgc\">YouTube<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Woody Leonhard mentioned within <a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/2018\/reports-of-coil-whine-in-new-surface-book-2-machines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">his post here<\/a>, that Surface Book 2 has also Coil Whine. At Microsoft Answers forum there is <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/forum\/surfbook2-surfperf\/my-surface-book-2-i7-256gb-is-experiencing-coil\/4b4aa589-428b-43cc-a522-5f4bad1368e1?messageId=de4ea9e6-1e58-4f0f-8f76-60c07596c125\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this thread<\/a>, where users discussing coil whine sind November 2017. Another thread with a video may be found <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surface\/forum\/surfbook2-surfdrivers\/surface-book-2-15-1tb-fan-mild-coil-whine-battery\/c04cbea4-88aa-4581-90c8-e45b10b030ef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. Also at reddit.com users are discussing coil whine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Surface\/comments\/7dd9q1\/coil_whine_on_surface_book_2_135\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Surface\/comments\/7ppjfp\/surface_book_2_15_coil_whine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Surface\/comments\/7hy624\/surface_book_2_coil_whine_lot_number_thread\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to download a Surface Pro LTE-Recovery Image?<\/h2>\n<p>If you own a Surface Pro LTE (available since December 2017), it's hard to obtain a recovery image. Microsoft has created a web site to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/surfacerecoveryimage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">download recovery images<\/a> for all surface models.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Surface-Modelle f\u00fcr Recovery-Images\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/2jfzciK.jpg\" alt=\"Surface-Modelle f\u00fcr Recovery-Images\" width=\"584\" height=\"484\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the list box (see above) doesn't offers an image for Surface LTE.
