Here are a few details. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Background: VMware Tools 10.3.0 security update<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/9367bb1a74d943a28520041f644ed59f\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\">Within my German blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2018\/08\/09\/vmware-sicherheitsupdate-und-player-sicherheitsmngel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VMware: Sicherheitsupdate und Player-Sicherheitsm\u00e4ngel<\/a> I've informed at the beginning of August 2018, that VMware had released an update of VMware Tools to version 10.3.0 on July 23, 2018. Installation of VMware Tools 10.3.0 was recommended for the following products:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Windows Server 2016\n<li>Windows 10\n<li>Windows Server 2012 R2\n<li>Windows 8.1\n<li>Windows Server 2012\n<li>Windows 8\n<li>Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)\n<li>Windows 7 SP1\n<li>Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2)\n<li>Windows Vista SP2\n<li>Windows Server 2012 R2 with Microsoft update <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalog.update.microsoft.com\/search.aspx?q=kb2919355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB2919355<\/a>\n<li>Windows 8.1 with Microsoft update&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalog.update.microsoft.com\/search.aspx?q=kb2919355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KB2919355<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Already on July 12, 2018, a Security Advisory <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210327154056\/https:\/\/www.vmware.com\/security\/advisories\/VMSA-2018-0017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VMSA-2018-0017<\/a> was released, which addressed a closed vulnerability CVE-2018-6969 in HGFS through VMware Tools 10.3.0. VMware Tools must be updated for each Windows VM to address the CVE-2018-6969 vulnerability. The release notes describe the changes , while the fixed bugs are documented in the <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201109033200\/https:\/\/docs.vmware.com\/en\/VMware-Tools\/10.3\/rn\/vmware-tools-1030-release-notes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolved issues<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>VMware tools 10.3.0 pulled<\/h2>\n<p>On September 7, 2018, VMware sent an important mail to users of VMware Tools 10.3.0 informing them of a major issue with VMware Tools 10.3.0.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Important notice regarding your VMware \u2026 <\/p>\n<p>The VMware Tools product team has recently identified an issue where the VMXNET3 virtual network adapter driver included in VMware Tools 10.3.0 can cause a host panic (PSOD) or VM network connectivity loss in some configurations. In response to this issue, VMware has recalled the VMware Tools 10.3.0 release. This release is no longer available for download. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A serious bug in the VMXNET3 Virtual Network Adapter driver included in VMware Tools 10.3.0 can cause a 'Host Panic' error (Purple Diagnostic Screen (PSOD)) in special&nbsp; configurations on the host. As a result, the VM network configuration may be lost. Therefore, VMware has withdrawn VMware Tools 10.3.0 and strongly recommends a downgrade to VMware Tools 10.2.5.
