YouTube started to release the mini-player to a broader user base, and it even works in Microsoft Edge. I have tested this feature briefly, here some information and impressions to the topic.

What is it about?

When playing YouTube videos in a browser, you have the option of displaying the video in a reduced size in the lower right corner. On Android smartphones I had known this for ages and thought that it would work in the browser window as well. Responsible for this is a control called YouTube player.

Now I read here, that this probably isn't true, and that there is no video playback in a mini player on a desktop browser. Because YouTube has probably run A/B test with a mini player with different users since March 2018. Since this weekend, it seems the feature has begun rolling out to a large scale for most users. So I tested it right away.

(Click to size)

The feature is available by clicking on the Activate mini player icon next to the gearwheel icon in the video. The video is then reduced to the overlay window shown in the picture above on the lower right and anchored there. A click on the mini-player returns to normal video playback in the browser page.

Works also in Microsoft Edge

It even works in Microsoft Edge under Windows 10. In Windows 10 V1809, where I tested it for a short time, the result is still a bit awkward – switching back worked on the test machine only with a delay and sometimes the controls were missing after switching back to the browser view. Refreshing the YouTube browser page then revealed the controls again.

What's with IE, Chrome, Firefox?

I tried to use this feature with Google Chrome 69 portable under Windows 10. But I was not (yet) offered the option there. The same is true for Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 10 and Windows 7 SP1 as well.

Then I repeated the test in Windows 7 SP1 with Chrome and Firefox. With Google Chrome browser (version 69) I couldn't complain. The same applies to the Firefox browser in version V62.0.2. Everything works as expected with both browsers. What are your experiences? Is the mini-player offered in the browser?

[German]Short information for users of the platform YouTube.
