These drivers are distributed via Windows Update.

Microsoft has published an article What's new in printing in Windows 10, version 1809 in the Techcommunity.

The old way

Previous versions of Windows contained basic printer drivers that allowed easy printing if no special printer driver was available for the device. Actually a proven approach, which made it possible to control printers and scanners in Windows in most cases.

The problem: The drivers must be shipped with the Windows installation image. But this leads to a `footprint' of Windows 10 becoming more and more bigger in size. At least, the Windows 10 installation image no longer fits on a DVD.

Standard driver only via Windows Update

To reduce the footprint of a Windows installation, printer and scanner drivers will no longer be shipped with the operating system. The drivers can be installed from Windows 10, version 1809, when a device is connected via Windows Update. It is important to know certain conditions.

When a system is upgraded to Windows 10, version 1809, the installed printers continue to work with the same printer driver as before.

If a new printer is installed and the Windows PC or print server has access to Windows Update, the correct driver is automatically downloaded and installed.

If a new printer is installed, but Windows Update is not available, a driver is not automatically installed. In this case, Windows will install Mopria-compatible printers without the need for an external driver.

With an existing Internet connection and a known printer, Windows 10 V1809 changes little for the user.

Windows supports Mopria printers

Starting with Windows 10, version 1809, Windows now supports Mopria-compatible Wi-Fi printers. If a driver is not available, Windows can install these printers without you having to install any additional software or drivers.

Most modern Wi-Fi printers support the Mopria standard. Consult the manufacturer's website to determine if your printer is compatible with the Mopria standard.

[German]Microsoft introduces Windows 10 Version 1809, another change in the supply of printer and scanner drivers.
