[German<\/a>]Occasionally in Windows (especially under Windows 10) an update installation is aborted and the operating system drops the error code 0x8007042B. Here are some hints for correcting this error.<\/p>\n

Notes on the error 0x8007042B<\/h2>\n

\"\"Searching the Internet for update error 0x8007042B results in a number of hits. In Windows 10,the error occurs with feature updates in connection with the subcode 0x2000d (0x8007042B-0x2000D). This Microsoft Answers forum thread<\/a> deals with this case, for example:<\/p>\n

I have problems updating Windows 10 on my Packard Bell EasyNote TSX66HR with Windows 10 Home, version 1607, OS build 14393.2156.<\/p>\n

I am trying to update to OS Build 16299.<\/p>\n

I recieve the error code 0x8007042B – 0x2000D and the comment \"the installation failed in the SAFE-OS phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation\".<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Within this case the upgrade to build 16299 (Windows 10 V1709) was triggered during the migration phase. The error code 02x in 0x2000D stands for this phase (see Windows 10: Analyze upgrade errors<\/a>). The error code 0x8007042B itself stands for:<\/p>\n

ERROR_PROCESS_ABORTED; The process was terminated unexpectedly.<\/p>\n

and doesn't really help to find the cause directly. Something has finished the update installation process.<\/p>\n

Fix #1: Download and install the update manually<\/h2>\n

The first approach is to download the update from Microsoft Update Catalog<\/a> and then install it manually from the download folders by double-clicking. If this fails, the following steps can be tried, whereby I would try a manual installation after each step.<\/p>\n

Fix #2: Uninstall\/deactivate Antivirus software<\/h2>\n

An unexpected abort of an installation process simply 'smells' like a third-party program like an antivirus software intervening and aborting the process. As a precautionary measure, an installed third-party antivirus software should therefore be deactivated on a trial basis. If this does not help, it is recommended to try uninstalling the antivirus software. Afterwards a Clean Tool of the antivirus provider has to be executed. This should free the system from installation remnants. After a restart, a new installation of the update can be attempted.<\/p>\n

Fix #3: Check Windows for damaged files<\/h2>\n

Possibly a damaged Windows is also the cause for the installation abort. In order to exclude this cause, the system should be checked with Windows tools. How this works is described within my the blog post Check and repair Windows system files and component store<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Fix #4: Reset Windows Update cache<\/h2>\n

One action that might help (but I'm skeptical) is to reset the Windows Update cache, using the following steps.<\/p>\n

1. Open the command prompt window by clicking Run as administrator<\/em>.<\/p>\n

2. Then try to run the following commands – where Windows 10 does not always stop the services.<\/p>\n

net stop wuauserv
\nnet stop cryptSvc
\nnet stop bits
\nnet stop msiserver<\/p>\n

ren C:\\Windows\\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
\nren C:\\Windows\\System32\\catroot2 catroot2.old<\/p>\n

net start wuauserv
\nnet start cryptSvc
\nnet start bits
\nnet start msiserver<\/p>\n

The ren commands clear the update cache so that a damaged update package can be excluded as the cause of the error.<\/p>\n

If this does not help, you can still try to evaluate the log files of the update (see following articles). If this does not continue, I can only think of reinstalling Windows. To do this, you can create a Windows 10 installation medium using the Windows Media Creation Tool and then boot the system with it. Then Windows will be reinstalled.<\/p>\n
