The cause seems to be the update KB4467682 from the end of November 2018 for Windows 10 V1803. Addendum: Microsoft has confirmed this bug.

Yesterday I reported about a firmware update for Surface Book 2 (Surface Book 2 Firmware Update). At least there was no feedback from device owners that there were problems.

BSOD: SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED

Now I came across the hint that Surface Book 2 owners are struggling with sporadic blues screens. First reports can be found on reddit.com, where a user writes:

Last Thursday I started having at least once a day a Blue Screen on my Surface Book 2. I have the Aprils Update with the latest updates from windows update installed.

It simply reboots and I'm given the code : SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED.

And it restarts.

Does anyone have this issue or know how to fix it?

The user has installed Windows 10 Version 1803 on his machine and receives a BSOD from the category SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED on his Surface Book 2 sporadically, at least once a day. After that the device restarts of course. Shortly after the post, several users confirmed this behavior – and also within my German blog I received similar feedback.

Update KB4467682 seems to be the root cause

Within the reddit.com thread, a user also reported that update KB4467682 was the cause for the blues screen. He has uninstalled this update and no blues screen occurred since that time. The only problem with this approach is that the user need to block the reinstallation of update KB4467682 – otherwise the BSOD will come back.

Update KB4467682 was released on November 27, 2018 for Windows 10 version 1803 (see Patchday Windows 10-Updates (November 27, 2018)). According to Microsoft, this update contains 'quality improvements', and raises the OS build to 17134.441. The list of bug fixes is very long – among other things this update fixes the problem with registering file types in Windows 10 version 1803.
