This is the notification update for the end of support of this operating system. Here is some information about this update.

Blog reader Hans T. sent me a mail the night (4:45 a.m.) asking about an update for Windows 7:

Windows Update brought me the following update a few minutes ago:

2019-03 Update for Windows 7 for x86-based systems (KB4493132)

Recommended 244KB. Multiple installation attempts failed.

The Update Catalog does not contain the update. There is no other information about this update. I have temporarily hidden the update until more detailed information is available. You might be interested in this.

Well, here's the answer to the puzzle – it's an update you don't necessarily need and can hide.

Update KB4493132 for Windows 7 SP1

Update KB4493132 is for the 'Windows 7 SP1 support notification' announcing the End of Support for this operating system. Microsoft says:

After 10 years of servicing, January 14, 2020, is the last day Microsoft will offer security updates for computers running Windows 7 SP1. This update enables reminders about Windows 7 end of support.

This update is available through Windows Update. If automatic updates are enabled, this update is automatically downloaded and installed. The update does not require any prerequisites or restart after installation.

If this update is installed, Windows 7 users should expect to see an end-of-support notification displayed on their Windows 7 PC from April 2019. According to Microsoft, users should see thisnag screen 'a handful of times' in 2019. By starting the reminders now, Microsoft hopes that people will have time to plan and prepare the transition from Windows 7 to a successor system.

I've had discussed more details within my blog post Microsoft announces Windows 7 End of Life. Microsoft also writes in the blog post that users can select an option for "Don't notify again" when viewing the first notification. Then Microsoft won't send any more reminders.

[German]Microsoft has released update KB4493132 for Windows 7 SP1.
