Microsoft seems to block the upgrade to the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (Version 1903) as soon as external USB storage devices are found in the system. Here is some information on this topic. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Error message during upgrade<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/ssl-vg03.met.vgwort.de\/na\/c60e7c1a31fe492c9b91e15188e5936c\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\">Some users who are already trying to upgrade their Windows 10 systems receive an error message during installation, saying, that the PC cannot upgrade to Windows 10 version 1903. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Windows 10 Error: What needs your attention\" alt=\"Windows 10 Error: What needs your attention\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Su4dgon.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>At the tensforum there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenforums.com\/windows-insider\/130624-cant-upgrade-v1903-v1809.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this thead<\/a> on the topic, where it met someone in the release preview ring. The user has tried a clean install, but fails with the error. However, the answers are not very illuminating. Also the colleagues from German deskmodder.de have received user messages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deskmodder.de\/blog\/2019\/04\/09\/windows-10-1903-fix-fuer-dieser-pc-kann-nicht-auf-windows-10-aktualisiert-werden\/#comment-98729\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deskmodder.de\/phpBB3\/viewtopic.php?f=327&amp;t=21927\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> reporting this bug. Martin Geu\u00df also discusses this within German site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drwindows.de\/news\/fehlermeldung-ihr-pc-verfuegt-ueber-hardware-die-fuer-diese-windows-10-version-noch-nicht-bereit-ist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Windows<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2>Many guesses?<\/h2>\n<p>The error message from the above screenshot is not really helpful, because it does not give any indication what is going on. Martin Geu\u00df gives the following hints at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drwindows.de\/news\/fehlermeldung-ihr-pc-verfuegt-ueber-hardware-die-fuer-diese-windows-10-version-noch-nicht-bereit-ist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Windows<\/a>. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When updateing a Surface, check whether a memory card is inserted and remove it.&nbsp;\n<li>Also check if all drivers are up to date.\n<li>In addition, all peripherals that are not absolutely necessary should be removed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The colleagues from deskmodder.de are giving the following hints to overcome the upgrade issue:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Disconnect the machine from the Internet and attempt an offline installation using an ISO file.&nbsp;\n<li>Uninstall programs such as iTunes, FutureMark, BattlEye Anticheat (although these cannot be the cause of the above message).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some users identified Realtek card readers or the Creative sound card as the cause. I had also written a German blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borncity.com\/blog\/2016\/08\/04\/windows-10-anniversary-update-inkompatible-apps-vpc\/\">Windows 10 Anniversary Update: inkompatible Apps (VPC)<\/a> with hints to analyze the log files to find out more details. <\/p>\n<h2>Microsoft explains the upgrade stopper<\/h2>\n<p>The colleagues from <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201108022528\/https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/news\/microsoft\/windows-10-may-2019-update-to-be-blocked-if-using-usb-drives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bleeping Computer<\/a> noticed that Microsoft published a support document on this topic on April 23, 2019. The article, titled <em><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4500988\/windows-update-blocked-because-of-drive-reassignment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This PC can't be upgraded to Windows 10\" error on a computer that has a USB device or SD card attached<\/a> <\/em>explains the background. The Upgrade will be blocked, if you try to install Windows 10 V1903 on a computer that has a USB device or SD card attached and if the following conditions occurs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You are using a Windows 10-based computer that has either the April 2018 update (Windows 10, version 1803) or the October 2018 update (Windows 10, version 1809) installed on it.&nbsp;\n<li>An external USB device or SD memory card is connected to the computer that you want to update.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is simply because computers that are actually eligible for the upgrade may have a faulty drive reassignment on the external USB media during the installation of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update. <\/p>\n<p>For example, if you try to upgrade to Windows 10 May 2019 Update on a computer that has the October 2018 update installed and a USB stick plugged into a USB port, it may fail. Before the upgrade, the USB stick would have been mounted as drive G due to the existing configuration. After the upgrade, however, the device will be assigned a different drive letter. For example, the USB stick with the drive letter H will be reassigned.
