Yesterday Google officially announced the release of Android 5.1 – I wrote about it in my German blog post here. During that time no factory images of Android 5.1 has been available. This night Google provides some factory images of Android 5.1 for Nexus devices. Here is what is known so far.

What's new in Android 5.1?
Android 5.1 is just a maintenance release that shall correct some issues caused by Android 5.0.x on some Android devices. Nevertheless, some small improvements has been included in Android 5.1. The details are summarized in the following drawing (Multi-SIM Card Support, Device Protection and HD Voice Call).

Device Protection will be available only for Nexus 6 and Nexus 9. Android 5.1 intends also to improve stability and performance.
Which factory images are available for Nexus devices?
T-mobile support wrotes here, that Google Nexus 5 shall receive an update to Lolliop (Android 5.1 LMY47D) beginning March 9 as Over-the-Air (OTA) update. Since this night, Google has released already the following factory images for Android 5.1 at developers.google.com:
- Factory-Image Nexus 5: Download LMY47D
- Factory-Image Nexus 7 (2012) WiFi: Download LMY47D
- Factory-Image Nexus 10: Download LMY47D
The factory images are downloadable as .tgz archives and need to be flashed manually. Due to the T-mobile announcement, OTA updates (available via WiFi) should be provided during the next days (or weeks). Also factory images for Nexus 4, Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 will (hopefully) provided during the next hours or days.
