Is this really good news? A major takeover in the healthcare sector, or rather in the area of software for healthcare, may be on the horizon. According to reports, the US company Oracle is negotiating the takeover of Cerner. This is a company that also develops software for digitalization in healthcare in Germany. The takeover is said to be worth $30 billion.

The Wallstreet Journal (WSJ) reports here about these negotiations (Reuters wrote something about it here). The gist is that Oracle Corp. is in talks to buy Cerner Corp. The price for the acquisition is in the range of about $30 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

An agreement could be finalized soon, the WSJ writes, citing some of the people familiar with the acquisition. That's assuming, of course, that talks don't break down or drag on. Negotiations at Cener are being led by David Feinberg (chief executive officer), who took his position in October 2021. Feinberg came from Google, where he led the Alphabet Inc. division's push into healthcare and helped forge partnerships with some of the largest hospital systems in the United States. The goal was to collect and analyze their data.

If a deal is reached, it would be Oracle's largest ever, with a market value of more than $280 billion. Oracle has a strong presence in healthcare, offering technology to help insurers, providers and public health systems analyze data.

Oracle Corporation is a U.S. software and hardware company headquartered in Austin, Texas. The company specializes in developing and marketing computer hardware and software for enterprise customers. Most readers are probably familiar with Oracle as the provider of the Oracle Database database system. The company has 132,000 employees (May 2020) and revenues of $40.5 billion (2020).
