Amazon[German]As part of this week's Inspire 2023 partner conference, Microsoft also unveiled two new data backup products. The announcement came to my attention the other day on Twitter via the following post; Microsoft shared the details on July 18, 2023 in the post Welcome to Microsoft Inspire 2023: Introducing Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Archive.

Microsoft is addressing the problem that customers create more than 2 billion documents and emails in Microsoft 365 every day. However, this data is often unstructured, and traditional methods of manually processing and managing content are no longer effective at this scale, Microsoft says.

With Microsoft Syntex announced in the fall of 2022, you have an AI-based solution to enrich this content with automated processing and incorporate it into business-critical workflows and applications across your enterprise. However, the problem is that the larger the volume of content becomes, the more important it becomes to protect that content throughout its lifecycle and ensure better availability while controlling costs.

One threat – in addition to data loss due to storage media failure – is ransomware attacks, in which data media are encrypted. On the other hand, companies have legal obligations to retain data. To support companies with these challenges, Microsoft presented the products Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Archive at the Inspire partner conference.

Microsoft 365 Backup enables recovery of OneDrive, SharePoint and Exchange data at unprecedented speeds for large volumes of data with a recovery service level agreement (SLA). Here are the features:

  • Back up all or selected SharePoint sites, OneDrive accounts and Exchange mailboxes in the tenant.
  • Restore the tenant's files, sites, and mailboxes, in parallel to an earlier point in time in a granular manner or at scale.
  • Search or filter content in the backup based on key metadata such as item or site names, owners, or event types within specific restore point date ranges.

This all works within the security boundaries of Microsoft 365, and administrators can access Microsoft 365 Backup directly from the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.

Microsoft 365 Archive provides the option of a "cold data storage tier" where inactive or aging data can be kept in SharePoint at a cost-effective price. Because content is archived in place, it retains the valuable security, compliance, search and rich metadata of Microsoft 365. Details and videos showcasing the two products can be found in the linked post.
