[German]The provider of backup solutions, Veeam, had been thinking about supporting the Proxmox virtualization platform for some time. Veeam now plans to present this solution for the first time at the VeeamON 2024 event at the beginning of June 2024. So anyone who uses Veeam to back up VMware products and switches to Proxmox VE can expect corresponding support there too.

Announced January 2024
I had already mentioned it at the beginning of January 2024 in my German article Veeam strebt Unterstützung für Proxmox und Oracles Virtualisierung an. Veeam, vendor of backup solutions, announced that it is now investigating ways to support the virtualization solution Proxmox VE in the future. Oracle Linux KVM is also on Veeam's agenda and is to be supported with the next product release.
"We are exploring and prototyping Proxmox to see what is possible in the backup space," explained Anton Gostev, Veeam's Senior Veep for Product Management, in this forum post on January 11, 2024. And in this post, another Veeam product manager, Fabian Kessler, confirms that they are in early development of a Proxmox backup solution. Kessler's post appeared in the Veeam forums in the thread titled "Broadcom/VMware debacle", where Veeam users complain about Broadcom's actions.
Veeam Proxmox VE support is (almost) ready
I had read it the other day at administrator.de, Veeam wants to present its solution with Proxmox VE support at its VeeamON 2024 conference, which will take place from June 3 to 5, 2024 at the Diplomat Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Veeam article New addition to the Veeam Data Platform will be showcased at VeeamON 2024 event, highlighting how it simplifies data management and enables cyber resiliency states that Veeam support for the Proxmox VE virtualization platform has been repeatedly requested by Veeam customers from small and medium-sized businesses (SMB) and service providers.
The first version will now be ready, as Veeam promises that the new data protection feature will be presented live and online for the first time during VeeamON 2024. Veeam currently already supports VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager and Red Hat Virtualization, as well as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. Soon, the Veeam Data Platform, which provides data protection, data recovery and data freedom without platform or cloud lock-in, will support the Proxmox VE hypervisor for data protection.
What features will be available?
The manufacturer writes that Veeam's Proxmox VE support will provide the following features, among others:
Advertising
- Immutable backups: of Proxmox VE VMs can be stored on-premises and in the cloud. The memory-based immutability of the data is intended to protect against encryption by ransomware, accidental deletion or malicious destruction in the event of cyber attacks. Native support for tapes and rotating drives (Airgap) can also be used.
- Uncompromised backup performance: Thanks to the advanced CBT (Changed Block Tracking) integration and the hot-add backup mode, Proxmox VE users can now perform faster and more efficient virtual machine (VM) backups. This should minimize interruptions caused by lengthy backups and ensure smooth daily operations.
- Veeam BitLooker: By automatically excluding unused hard disk blocks that belong to deleted guest operating system files, for example, this intelligent function significantly increases backup performance and saves valuable storage space at the same time.
- Storage flexibility: With support for all Veeam Backup & Replication® backup repository types, including hardened repositories and object storage, backup repositories can be created from any storage.
- Freedom of full VM recovery: VMs from major virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V or the public cloud can be instantly restored to Proxmox VE – reducing downtime and maximizing productivity.
- Advanced granular recovery capabilities: Effortless identification and rapid recovery of all modified and deleted files, for example due to a ransomware attack, should ensure business continuity and security in the event of unexpected data loss or unplanned interruptions.
Overall, this all sounds promising, but it remains to be seen what impression the first live demo of Proxmox VE Backup at VeeamON 2024 will make and when the product will be available to end customers.
