In the Techcommunity article SharePoint News Connector Retirement, Microsoft announced the end of the connector on June 20, 2024. Microsoft writes that the SharePoint News Connector was a tool for Microsoft Teams. With the connector, SharePoint news could be integrated into team channels. However, Microsoft intends to discontinue the SharePoint News Connector and use alternative, more integrated solutions.

Microsoft encourages users to test the robust alternatives to the SharePoint News Connector. These are Teams Workflow, Viva Connections and Viva Amplify, which are designed to provide a more integrated and feature-rich news experience. With the alternatives, SharePoint Site News will continue to be shared within Teams channels.

  • Viva Connections News notifications: The Viva Connections app provides news notifications about Microsoft Teams and links users to the Viva Connections app via the notification (see).
  • Viva Amplify: Viva Amplify bundles internal communication processes into a single tool. Users create content once and then publish it via SharePoint, e-mail, Microsoft Teams and soon also via Viva Engage(see).

You can also create your own workflows in Teams (see this article). The process begins with the fact that no new SharePoint News connectors will be created from July 22, 2024, writes Microsoft. From August 26, Microsoft will begin to phase out the configured connectors. This change will be made automatically on the specified dates. No action is required from administrators, but Microsoft strongly recommends the following measures:

  • notify users of this change
  • update all relevant documentation
  • communicate the alternative solutions to ensure a smooth transition
