Announcement of general availability
I came across the Microsoft announcement in question via the following tweet, which is described in more detail in the Techcommunity article Microsoft Announces General Availability of Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Backup Storage at the end of July 2024.
The article states that Microsoft 365 was developed to ensure high availability, disaster recovery, security and data protection – well, that's just a marketing statement. Due to the increasing number of ransomware attacks, customers want extended self-service recovery capabilities over longer periods of time, according to Microsoft. Microsoft is therefore introducing its two solutions Microsoft 365 Backup and the underlying developer-focused Microsoft 365 Backup storage platform in general.
Microsoft 365 Backup
According to Microsoft, Microsoft 365 Backup lis designed to provide powerful backup and restore capabilities for critical active data and enable organizations to maintain business continuity. Redmond promises that this will be orders of magnitude faster than with conventional migration-based backup methods.

The product is designed to enable ultra-fast recovery of OneDrive, SharePoint and Exchange data. These backups are stored within the Microsoft 365 trust boundary. Microsoft therefore assumes that the risk of security breaches and excessive access to application data is limited.
Microsoft 365 Backup is designed to ensure business continuity while providing fast backups with frequent restore points and low average bulk restore times. Microsoft claims a 20x faster backup than traditional methods for backing up and restoring large amounts of Microsoft 365 data, citing internal research from 2024.
Microsoft 365 Backup is offered through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and is available as a standalone pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) solution with no additional licensing requirements.
Microsoft 365 Backup Storage
This solution gives third-party backup developers the ability to provide customers with the same benefits of the native Microsoft 365 Backup solution through their own integrated application. Microsoft 365 Backup Storage enables independent software vendors (ISVs) to develop applications that use the Microsoft 365 Backup Storage APIs to perform backups.
Users of these solutions should be able to take advantage of all the benefits of Microsoft 365 Backup and additionally benefit from applications provided by vendors. Microsoft lists veeam, Veritas, rubrik and Commfault as partners that can offer corresponding solutions.
