Dynamic Distribution Groups (DDGs) are email-enabled Active Directory group objects that are created to speed up the bulk sending of email messages. Microsoft describes DDGs in this support article.
Last week, I came across the article MC1024399 – Microsoft Exchange Online: New limit for dynamic distribution groups (DDGs) from the Microsoft 365 Message Center. In it, Microsoft announces that it will begin limiting the number of Dynamic Distribution Groups (DDGs) to 3,000 per organization from April 2025.
This means that administrators will have to remove existing DDGs when this limit is reached in order to be able to create new DDGs. This change is automatic and cannot be switched off.
Microsoft recommends that administrators of tenants that use DDGs check their number as a precaution. This can be done in the Dynamic distribution groups report of the Exchange Administration Center (EAC) of Exchange Online. To access this report, go to EAC > Reports > Mail flow > Dynamic distribution group report.
