Microsoft OneNote
Microsoft OneNote is a software for creating and organizing notes that has been in development since 2003. This software from Microsoft is offered with varying degrees of functionality for Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and as a web application.
However, Microsoft OneNote has had a "bumpy" history: originally included as a native Win32 application in certain Microsoft Office packages, at some point the solution was promoted as an app from the Store for Windows 10. OneNote 2016 was then removed from Office 365/2019, only to be reintroduced later (see OneNote 2016 is back in Office 365/2019).
The native OneNote application for Windows also returned and Microsoft even declared OneNote to be free at some point. But it had been clear for some time that OneNote as an app for Windows 10 would be discontinued in October 2025.
Microsoft reminds of end of support
On March 20, 2025, Microsoft reminded users of the end of support in the Microsoft 365 Message Center. In the message ID MC1035701 Immediate Action Required: 6 Months left, Migrate to OneNote on Windows Now! Microsoft announces that there are only six months left until the end of support for " OneNote for Windows 10" is reached.

What does end of support mean?
OneNote for Windows 10 will reach the end of support on October 14, 2025. The OneNote app will continue to work beyond this date, but there will be no more support or security updates or bug fixes.
OneNote for Windows 10 does not support Microsoft Information Protection (MIP). MIP can be used to mark sensitive or confidential data in companies. According to Microsoft, users working with outdated versions will lose access to content marked with MIP.
Microsoft also notes that OneNote for Windows 10 users will not have access to the AI-supported copilot, but this is probably a minor issue.
Limited features from summer 2025
In the article in question, Microsoft also points out that users of OneNote for Windows 10 will soon have to expect functional limitations.
- June 2025: OneNote for Windows 10 users will experience slower synchronization, which may impact real-time collaboration and multi-device access.
- July 2025: Starting this month, users will see in-app banners in OneNote for Windows 10 prompting them to switch to OneNote (M365).
As a precaution, Microsoft points out that these "nag banners" could interfere with users' workflows – it feels like a threat.
Migration to OneNote M365 recommended
Microsoft recommends that companies migrate to "OneNote for Windows" (OneNote M365) as soon as possible in order to continue to have access to new functions, security updates and improved performance. Microsoft has published a migration guide.
